Amarillo police plan cut of motorcycle force from 22 to 10, with officers reassigned to scout cars. Chief Rhodes cites 14 cents per mile cost and $40 maintenance plus $10 hazard pay as taxpayer drain. Residents favor keeping motor cycles for traffic control and safety.
Amarillo Film Society, under contract with the Museum of Modern Art, will present five old-time movie classics this winter starting September 7 at Amarillo College featuring the Marx Brothers and W. C. Fields. The schedule, contact George Turner at Russell Stationery Co, and notes strong civic interest in the screening series.
Pampa Oilers cut Amarillo West TexasNew Mexico League lead to a half game by beating the Gold Sox 11 9 as ten of the Oilers 11 runs came on home runs. The crowd topped 4 000 in the last regular home game with attendance possibly a league record.
A. B. Duncan 55 year old Canyon abstract firm owner was arraigned on charges of knowingly filing a forged warranty deed to two Canyon city lots. He was released on 2008 dollar bond. The case arose during an investigation that may be presented to a grand jury later this month. Duncan was arrested at his office by the sheriff and Texas Rangers.
A test ride in a recently repaired car in Perryton left two men dead Neil Thompson 29 Perryton mechanic and J W Sims 77 owner of one of the cars. Two others were injured including Harry Bar.
A Perryton area farmer and 17 year old Robert Hall were among the injured after a two car collision. Barlow suffered a mild brain concussion and facial abrasions while Hall had a concussion facial lacerations and a broken left arm. This is the third major smash up in three months with five killed and four injured in an earlier crash near Perryton and a family of three killed at an intersection.
Los Angeles soaks in a historic heat wave with 110 degrees at the official station, 112 in Glendale and 115 inland Bonita. San Diego reaching 104, and fires plus heavy water use marked the day as smog and heat claimed lives and challenged the region.

The City Commission sold 600000 in bonds to The First National Bank of Dallas at 2.9599714 percent average interest, the lowest of seven bids. Proceeds fund about 2500 acres near Amarillo Air Force Base for runway expansion, with bonds starting 1956 and maturing through 1980 at 3, 2.75, or 3 percent by period. Syndicate includes Merril Lynch and Dallas Union Security Co.

Mayor Art Jordan says the budget for the new fiscal year includes 10 new Police Department cars, with at least four unmarked for traffic patrol.
