Amarillo observes Labor Day with a giant parade at 10 a.m. from Third to Polk, marshaled by C W White. Afternoon Range Riders Rodeo at 2 30 p m followed by a doubleheader baseball night between Amarillo Gold Sox and Albuquerque Dukes at 7 p m and final rodeo at 5 30 p m.
The AFL and CIO blasted the 79th Congress in Labor Day statements. Green and Murray cited little legislative progress and hostile moves against labor. Steelman and Patterson pressed labor management unity and praised wartime cooperation while noting inflation risks and growing women’s employment.
Philippine government orders mass arrests of Hukbalahap leaders after midnight surrender deadline and uses artillery against dissidents. In central Luzon fighting rages near Manila as authorities target the alliance's leaders including Taruc nephew and congress member Simpauco. An AP report notes heavy fighting north and west of Manila with a spotter plane downed near Licabatuan.
Keokuk police hold 33 year old David Sarbaugh of Fort Madison on drunken driving charges after his car struck a Burlington freight train near Fort Madison, uncoupled a coupling, and he drove on toward Keokuk. Burlington crew and witnesses cannot explain how the collision occurred.
Miss Bertha Mehrtens 38 known for mercy work in Pin Point was found strangled near her home. A 24 year old laborer was rescued from an armed mob and questioned. police reported angry neighbors surrounded the suspect's home but no charges were filed.
A three vehicle crash at the Highways 66 and 136 junction early yesterday left three injured and three vehicles heavily damaged. R H Thomas of 611 Jackson received treatment at St. Anthony's Hospital, Johnny Sawyer of 1522 Crockett went to Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital, and James Looper of 2208 North West First was admitted to St. Anthony's for minor injuries. Other involved parties were unharmed. The Ford driven by Thomas blew a tire, struck by a Chevrolet driven by Looper, forcing the Studebaker driven by Mark Taylor to swerve. the Studebaker carried Johnny Sawyer Margaret McCartey and Mary Wells. The crash occurred about 12:25 AM.
The Crescent City was due in New York today carrying 19 servicemen from Guantanamo and the Great Republic at San Francisco from Yokohama with 11 Navy personnel aboard.
In Shanghai Gen Chou En Lai urged the United States to end aid to China or openly back Chiang Kai shek in a total civil war. He condemned $800 million in surplus U S civilian goods sales and accused Washington of dual policy while Marshall and Stuart push for peace.
The draft machinery restarts tomorrow with a quota of 25,000 men aged 19 to 29 to be inducted in September after a two month holiday. Lt. William J. Reilly of San Francisco in an Army Air Force P-80 topped 578.36 mph in two measured runs at March Field, the fastest yet in competition but short of the 606 mph British Meteor record. Other pilots posted speeds from 547 to 572 mph while Howard Hughes still holds the 352 mph American mile record.
