Harold Neumann of Moline Illinois wins the third Grove trophy heat at Cleveland Municipal Airport, averaging 207.292 mph in a Howard racing plane. He finishes narrowly ahead of Marion McKeen of Los Angeles as 75,000 spectators watch the high speed event part of the National Air Races program.
A tropical disturbance moving toward the Florida Straits prompted weather officials to issue caution for 36 hours. Northeast storm warnings stretched from Miami to Fort Myers as Key West could face strong winds while the hurricane center passed south of the Florida Keys.
Walter L. Hopkins arrives to finalize meetings for the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Amarillo. A committee led by Major Edmond R. Wiles will report on monuments at Manassas and plans to turn a 130 acre tract into a Confederate shrine near Beauvoir the Jefferson Davis home. Hopkins notes the chamber and citizens deserve praise for arrangements though funding limited.
C. S. Lambie of Longview and Amarillo says Dr. Thomas A. Lambie, royal physician to Emperor Haile Selassie, told him by phone from Pittsburgh that he would sail for Ethiopia either Monday or Tuesday. Mission in the United States remains undisclosed.
Amarillo marks Labor Day with a host of visitors for a Confederate reunion. A 2:30 rodeo at the Tri-State Fair grounds promoted by Jim Yeaman of Claude runs four days as main entertainment. Veterans admitted free while city and county offices banks and most downtown stores close for rest.
In Addis Ababa on September 1, one hundred sixty European residents evacuated the city including many Italians, the largest single day exodus in the current Italo-Ethiopian crisis. Families cried as relatives departed after decades in Ethiopia. Jerusalem reports a world Moslem congress called for September 123 in Geneva to discuss the Ethiopian situation.
Floydada's Col. Thomas Montgomery, 88, will participate in the 45th annual United Confederate Veterans reunion in Amarillo. Montgomery joined the army at 17, served with the 12th Alabama Cavalry in the Army of Tennessee, fought at Atlanta and Bentonville, and surrendered in 1865 near Goldsboro. He owns the TM Bar Ranch in Floyd County and is known as Colonel Montgomery.
Confederate veterans and attendants will begin arriving this morning. Mason King, chairman, says the reception committee will be at Fort Worth and Denver station at 7:45 AM to greet trains over the next three days. Daily train arrivals are listed for Santa Fe Rock Island and Fort Worth and Denver lines.
Emperor Haile Selassie told the Associated Press that Ethiopia, as a sovereign state, granted a concession to Standard Oil of New Jersey and that the United States is not party to the 1906 Anglo French Italian treaty. He said the deal is signed and cannot be recalled, despite British advice to withhold.
Dallas reports the American Legion and auxiliary opened their state convention with John D. Crowley of Cambridge issuing a warning on the communist menace to American ideals. Delegates planned a joint banquet, parades, and contests with speakers including M. J. Gaines and Carl Nesbitt.
A ferocious dust storm gave way to heavy rain last night across the North Plains led by Amarillo where about 1.25 inches drenched the area. Widespread showers extended from Canadian to Miami with totals ranging from a quarter to more than an inch, while roads flooded and traffic detoured via Dalhart and Pampa.
Hard showers drenched northern and central Oklahoma helping soil moisture for fall wheat plowing and other crops. More rain forecast could disrupt Labor Day celebrations. Cotton growers suffer from leaf worms while streets flooded in Ponca City and Perry. Beaver Panhandle reports up to half an inch, Boise City and Guymon dry.

In Corsicana Texas on September 1 a suspect in the shooting of Will Melton Frost Texas night watchman was arrested in Waco and brought to the county jail. Officers said charges would likely be filed the next day.
Ponca City reports the 101 Ranch rodeo revival opened with broncho riding bull-dogging and reair-roning exhibitions. A terrapin derby planned for today was postponed until tomorrow due to schedule changes.
A coroner's jury in Santa Fe returns a verdict that Mrs. Harold L. Ickes died from a cervical vertebrae fracture and possible skull fracture after a car overturning crash north of Espanola. The jury does not assign blame and district attorney David Chavez says he will question three survivors when able.
Joseph P. Ryan head of the International Longshoremen's Association said tonight that in all probability a general strike of longshoremen would be called at New Orleans next Tuesday and that indications were it might spread to reach pro portions of the recent Pacific Coast tie up.
