City Commission votes 3 to 2 to restore preexisting rules on beer sales and carry-in alcohol at the Civic Center Complex. Commissioner Hodge and Commissioner Wilson oppose repeal arguing it undoes progress to control drinking. Second reading required for final lifting of the ban and exit from beer vendor status.
The Amarillo City Commission voted 3 2 to kill the ordinance merging the Board of City Development with the Board of Convention and Visitors Activities. Commissioner Briggs led the motion denying the merger, opposing votes by Mayor Drummond and Commissioner Wilson. Weather forecast notes partly cloudy skies with possible thunderstorms through Thursday and cooler afternoons.
The board approved beer sales at the civic center while anti beer petitioners urged repeal. Mayor Drummond dissented on repeal of the April 6 motion. Commissioner Taylor defended the vote saying drinking is legal and rights should not be denied. The panel also abandoned plans to merge the Board of City Development with the Board of Convention and Visitors Activities in a 3 2 vote.
The Amarillo Hospital District adopted a resolution urging the City Commission to call a December 7 1976 bond election to replace Northwest Texas Hospital with a 250 bed facility at the Amarillo Medical Center at no tax increase. Proponents cite improved physician recruitment and modern facilities while noting current tax rates can be held steady.
Negotiators from the Senate and House approved a compromise to halt postal rate increases and service cuts through March 15 1977. The measure would give the Postal Service 1 billion dollars and create a seven member commission to study operations. It also includes provisions on post office closings appeals and retained mailing privileges for catalogs and nonprofit publications.
Washington AP reports that Rep Wayne L Hays plans to resign effective Sept 8 amid the Elizabeth Ray payroll sex accusations. The House Ethics Committee meets in closed session as it weighs its options and the payroll sex probe ends with his departure.
