A Rock Island Lines mail car carrying two Falcon air to air missiles caught fire near Alameed. The first rocket ignited and the warhead ejected from the baggage car. A demolition squad from Amarillo Air Force Base disarmed the second rocket as officers evacuated a half mile radius.
Rep. Walter Rogers of Pampa blasted the federal government and the sugar trust on the House floor, alleging discrimination against western farmers by blocking sugar beet production. He questioned reliance on foreign sugar and accused State and Agriculture departments of collusion, promising more details on a forthcoming page.
Mrs. Sheila Trevena bought a small European car after Zebbie the Great Dane climbed into the rear. The dog toppled her while driving, causing a crash into a wall and house. She was fined 10 pounds for careless driving.
In Turkey this morning two men leaped from the second floor of a burning Peoples Hotel. W. E. Peterson of Vernon suffered severe burns and was listed fair by Stanley Hospital in Matador. Garland Breedlove of Waco, bruised and burnt, was listed in good condition. Fire destroyed the brick hotel and damaged an adjoining apartment. Mrs Corrine Rigney, owner, was seriously burned but survived. About 50 firefighters from Turkey Quitaque and Matador fought the blaze.

Dr. Edward L. Teller urged immediate resumption of nuclear weapons testing and development in HOT SPRINGS Arkansas. He cited fear as delaying progress and warned the Russians gained a head start since 1958. Teller, a UC Berkeley physicist, also noted reduced use of radioisotopes due to fear.
T Sgt Clem Jandel and Sgt Frank Slater led a removal and disarming operation in Alamreed under a dim 25 watt light. They dismantled the warhead and rocket motor of a Hughes radar and infra red homing rocket, weighing about 120 pounds and five miles range, before transporting warheads to Amarillo Air Force Base.
Mickey Mantle hit his 48th home run of the season in the fourth inning versus the Twins tying the AL record for Yankee rivals. The blast brought New York to 193 on the season and preceded Bill Skowron’s later homer giving the Yankees 194. Brazilian naval infantry reportedly landed on Santa Catarina coast at Laguna near Porto Alegre to subdue southern supporters of Vice President Joao Goulart. Gen. Jose Machado Lopes said a small force landed and signaled possible larger actions as Goulart debated returning to seize the presidency from exile in Uruguay.
