Blaze sweeps Galveston business district
Fire from a hardware store swept several business houses in Galveston and by 9 PM was under control though still burning. Oscar Fletcher, 23, is jailed on a charge of assault with intent to murder after Verna May Raney, 9, was struck by a .32 caliber bullet from a passing car on North Buchanan Street. Her condition is not serious. Fletcher’s bond is set at 1500 dollars. Three others in the car with Fletcher, Pete Allgood, Woodrow Campbell, and Chester Shelton, claimed Fletcher did the shooting. Allgood and Campbell corroborated the claim. All three were detained, but only Fletcher is held pending further action. In Rochester a 63 year old steeplejack James Kemp survived a two hour peril atop a 150 foot chimney after Gondolfo Di Primo 40 fell to his death as scaffolding ropes slipped. Kemp clung to a narrow ledge eight feet below the top while fire crews and planes tried to lower rescue lines.
