Communist gunners fired at least 14 rockets into Saigon killing 23 on National Day. In Cholon District 20 died and six were injured, as the barrage began Thursday night and continued into Friday. Authorities reported several more casualties and ongoing search efforts as U.S. forces hunted the crews.
Highway patrolman Jerry Rector was sent to the intersection of NE 24th and Fol som Road about 9 15 p m Thursday to investigate a car pedestrian accident. The victim turned out to be a well proportioned dummy fully dressed and lying lifelessly in the roadway. At least it wasn t breathing said Officer Rector of the apparent handiwork of Halloween pranksters.
The USS Mizar reported photographing parts of the nuclear submarine Scorpion in 10,000 feet of water about 400 miles south of the Azores. The vessel with 99 crew members had been missing since May 21 while en route to Norfolk, Virginia.
Harris County auditor has no authority to usurp the county clerk's power to issue paychecks. Atty. Gen. Crawford Martin ruled after Harris County Atty. Joe Reseber requested the opinion. The dispute centers on a county payroll computer system and where control should reside.

Bonn officials reported Gerhard Boehm a 61 year old Defense Ministry clerk died by own action after disappearing Oct 21. He was the sixth government official to die mysteriously since Oct 8 amid spy investigations. Police recovered his death note and a briefcase with personal items. no security breach found.
The Prairie reports Nixon with 53.41 per cent of 352 votes from Nixon own campus poll at West Texas State University Canyon 53.41 percent for Nixon Wallace Hubert Humphrey trailing. Paul Eggers led GOP gubernatorial contest on campus with 200 votes 57 percent while Democrat candidate trailed.
The Democratic National Committee raised its budget for the final week to 3 million dollars as Humphrey and Muskie rise in the race. Treasurer Robert Short says contributions and loans average about 1 million weekly, with spending matching Nixon on election eve traffic.
