Police said Tuesday that four persons, including a physician and an independent oil operator, were asphyxiated while watching television at the oilman’s house in Gainesville. The report appears on page 8.
Movie star Claude Rains died in Sandwich New Hampshire on Tuesday at age 77. He had maintained a home there for many years, using it when not filming. The obituary notes his long association with the town.

Memorial Day paused for a moment as Leathernecks pressed the offensive.
Three Arab diplomats backed by Russia veto denounced bloodthirsty Israel before the Security Council and vowed to fight until victory in any Mideast war. The session highlighted the Gulf of Aqaba blockade as the council reconvened to hear Jordan, Japan, Iraq, and the United States.
Dark thunderclouds lingered over the Panhandle for a fourth day as a tornado touched down near Boys Ranch and large hail peppered the area. Flooding forced evacuation of more than 40 in Floydada while rain caused several auto accidents in Amarillo injuring three teenagers. Hugo Beyer of Dimmitt reported a ground tornado 10 miles north of Boys Ranch near Texas 51, seen for 15 to 20 minutes with no damage reported. Three youths were injured in a crash at 34th and Western and rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital. driver Jerry Jenkins, 16, sustained facial injuries.
Tornadoes hail and heavy rain hit Texas Tuesday before 7 p.m. from north of Dumas in the Panhandle to Greenville in Northeast Texas. A funnel cloud northwest of Lake Grapevine near Tarrant County appeared briefly but caused no damage as egg to baseball size hail was reported along U.S. 287. Police at Dumas logged the event.
A line of strong storms moved west to east across North Texas blasting Burkburnett Electra Decatur and Paris area with hail up to golf ball size and high winds. A tornado was reported near Burkburnett. a garage and water tower were destroyed. The Weather Bureau issued severe thunderstorm and tornado watches for East and North Texas extending toward Abilene.
Rain halted the Memorial Day 500 after 18 minutes of racing at Indianapolis. Parnelli Jones in the turbine car led a 32-car field before officials stopped the race to dry the 2.4 mile track. Lloyd Ruby retired on lap four with a burned piston. The race will resume Wednesday at 10 a.m. EST with Jones aiming to extend his dominant run.
