Yaa Texans mourn the death of Rusty the first captive born whooping crane at Aransas Refuge in Texas. Manager Julian Howard reports Rusty likely died after parents Jo and Crip abandoned the chick and predators or natural causes are suspected with no direct sighting of the killer.
Washington May 29 AP Movie writers John Howard Lawson and Dalton Trumbo challenged their contempt convictions for refusing to reveal if they were communists. The Supreme Court declined to review, leaving one last chance or penalties and jail terms to be imposed by the district court for ten Hollywood figures in contempt cases.
Betty Thimming 4 of Muleshoe and three other Thimling children were among eight injured when a Sunday morning crash near Amarillo ignited gasoline. Jane Carolyn 18 months and Thurman Dale 8 died at the scene. Betty Jane and Lenla Fay 6 remained in critical or poor condition at Northwest Texas Hospital. Betty Jane had burns and shock. Lenla Fay suffered burns and a possible skull fracture. Eugene Thimling and Mary Thimling, both seriously injured, were treated at local hospitals. Driver Pete Lane 26 of Plainview faces murder without malice charges with a $5000 bond. Other victims included Mozelle Sells and William Grady. Funeral services for A R Meek were set at Sanger Methodist Church.
Washington May 2 The great day ends after 50 regional spelling champions register at 8 30 and spell until 4 21 PM. Colquitt Dean and Diana Reynard tie for first after a grueling contest. The director calls it the longest toughest Bee. $3 080 in prizes awarded at a Willard Hotel banquet.

Three hundred Tennessee National Guardsmen moved into Morristown to quell violent disorders from a nine week strike at the American Enka rayon plant. Gov. Browning authorized militia after outbreaks and two car overturnings as workers approached the picket line. No injuries reported. Local 1054 CIO workers seek a 10 cent pay raise above the current $1.32 hourly rate.
Memorial Day weekend death toll reaches 375 nationwide with Texas leading in fatalities at 375. Traffic crashes account for about two thirds of deaths while drownings total 53 and other mishaps 78. State-by-state list shows Texas 19 9 4 and Ohio 7 1 7 among others.
More than 600 old settlers and thousands of friends gathered in Floydada to honor Floyd County’s 60th anniversary. Judge Alton Chapman spoke on county history and early trails, with a noon barbecue, parade, business meeting, and lively dancing in a newly built arena. The county was founded May 28, 1890 from Blanco Canyon by early settlers including Arthur B. Duncan family.
A small tornado skirted Pilot Point Texas late Monday causing window damage in Pilot Point and surrounding farms. A 25 minute hail storm followed the twister damaging gardens and crops. Otis Seagin’s home four miles south of Pilot Point was destroyed as his family sheltered in a cellar. No injuries were reported. Fort Worth Dallas Mineral Wells etc experienced severe storms with wind gusts up to 40 mph and sheet lightning along the north edge of Dallas.
