Identification Made by Police From Clothing

The wire-bound body of missing Peter Levine was found on Davenport Neck Long Island Sound and identified by detectives from clothing remnants. Detectives Gleason and Lynch noted torn copper wire binding one arm. The boy, son of Murray Levine a New York attorney, disappeared February 24 after leaving school and a ransom demand awaited payment. Autopsy ordered. possible poisoning not ruled out. Federal investigators arrived after the body was brought to New Rochelle. The father was away from home when the body was found, and a $25,000 reward had been offered.

Summer Bathing Season Opening Brings Tragedy

Amarillo’s opening of the 1938 swimming season at Buffalo Dam ended in tragedy as Ellen Pearl Renegar, 22, drowned after slipping into a deep hole while wading with friends. Rescue attempts involved her husband J P Renegar, Mrs. A P Womack, John W Gerbitz, and Red Cross and fire department crews. Despite hour of artificial respiration and rapid ambulance response, she did not survive. The body was recovered by Mr. Coffee and relatives at the scene. the incident occurred on a 95 degree day two miles south of Ambarger on U S Highway 60. Continued report on page 7, column 4.

Demos Warned Of Party Split

Washington, May 29. Senator Burton Wheeler, Montana Democrat, warned that the Democratic Party faces a split and possible defeat in 1940 if Roosevelt administration leaders continue to intervene in party primaries. He cited Hopkins and WPA endorsements as fueling factionalism and aiding third parties, naming notably LaFollette's Wisconsin movement. Wheeler said primary meddling tests administration support for candidates and could threaten key Senate vacancies including Gillette, Van Nuys, Clark, Smith, McCarran, George, and Tydings.
