Frenchman Escapes Grave After Japanese Attack

KUNMING China May 28 Lance Corporal Fernand Cron of the French colonial infantry recounted escaping a mass grave with 53 comrades at Dongdang on the French Indo China border. He showed a four and a half inch scar on the back of his neck from a saber strike and said he and two Annamites crawled from the trench.

Yokohama Bombed in Largest B29 Daylight Raid

Guam May 29 The Yokohama industrial and shipping center was hit by over 450 B-29s dropping 3200 tons of fire bombs in the greatest daylight raid yet by Marianas based B-29s. The attack targeted warehouses docks canals and chemical plants with Yokohama described as Japan’s fifth largest city.

Drouth Slashes Wheat Prospects Across Panhandle

Five dry months have left Panhandle wheat fields with poor prospects. Across east Claude to the New Mexico line prospects fall from 15 bushels to plowed fields westward. Deep subsoil moisture and root growth offer slim hope for a crop without rain, with averages around 10 bushels near Amarillo and Claude, but many areas in Bushland and the North Plains show severely reduced yields.

Willow Run Plant to Close After Bombers Finish

Detroit May 28 The Willow Run bomber plant near completion of four engine B 24 bomber production and will shut down June 15. The notice cites partners Shaw-Walker Firing Cabinets Russell Stationery and Olver Wigleins Lumber Co with contact numbers and locations in Pittsburgh and Detroit.
