Malcolm Scott Carpenter defends the Atlas mission as he finishes the Aurora 7 voyage. He denies fatigue during the third orbit and explains six tasks were active south of Hawaii as retrorockets fired. He cannot confirm proper firing but notes further investigation.
Navy Lt Cmdr Carpenter described weightless life as restful and serene and spoke of eight to two weeks in orbit while recounting a flight that may have underperformed thrust. He arrived at Patrick AFB from Grand Turk after a dramatic mission ended in danger and was greeted by family and his wife Ren.
A Perryton area storm ripped through McMillen Community with multiple tornado funnels, destroying farms and barns. Homes such as J W Jines’ stucco house were damaged as livestock went missing or survived. Reports detail hail, scattered wreckage, and a missing 200 sheep near Perryton.
Reports list 13 injured as funnels sweep McMillen Community and Booker. At McMillen, Harvey Urban, 66, suffers crushed back and chest in serious condition. G. E. West Berlin police say Communist forces opened fire on two officers at the Spandau Canal while a refugee trying to swim to freedom was killed in broad daylight. The incident follows a second refugee death within 24 hours as bullets also missed three strolling bystanders.

investigators for the Civil Aeronautics Board say a high explosive in the right rear lavatory caused the Continental jet crash that killed 45 last Tuesday night. A mockup at Appanoose County fairgrounds supports the finding with possible dynamite among the explosives. CAB experts will explain at a news conference after reconstructing the plane.

Memphis May 27 A Texas audit shows an investment of 94.08 in Sudan Storage Co. yielded 35 165 to former Governor Frank Clement of Tennessee over two years. His father Robert S. Clement received the same return on an identical 94.08 stake, with 1 608 in 1958 and 3 557 in 1959 as distributions.
