San Mateo Calif May 27 A Saipan woman who may have seen Amelia Earhart alive says she was told the famed flyer was executed by the Japanese military. Mrs Josephine Akiyama now a surgical aide in a San Mateo hospital identified Earhart photos as the American lady pilot seen in custody on Saipan in July 1937. The Times notes her account had circulated for years but publication details are new. The mystery surrounding Earhart’s disappearance on her July 2 1937 flight from Lae to Howland remains unresolved.
Baseball scores list Austin over Amarillo 12 to 1 and Rio Grande Valley 5 over Tulsa 3. Victoria 7 over San Antonio with a question mark in one result. In Miami on May 27 AP reports an unidentified object detected in deep water beyond the three mile limit off Key West prompted an investigation by surface craft divers and submarines. Key West Naval Base officials say indicators are lacking for a submarine, with other possibilities including a coral ridge or a sunken wreck such as the Lake City.
Morning report notes Amarillo has seen sun on 133 of 148 days this year. Comparative readings at 3 p.m. Friday show variable conditions. Winds light, visibility fair, sky partly cloudy across regions including Houston and Oklahoma City with readings around 15 to 17 MPH.
Beaver Creek a registered quarter horse owned by Mitchell Ranch of Canadian and Reed Hill of Higgins, received an artificial elm wood leg after a stall accident last March. The $2,000 prosthetic, built by Panhandle Artificial Limb Co., includes a knee hinge and supports a horseshoe, enabling the 16-year-old sire to continue stud duties. Co-owners kept him as a sire for his conformation and offspring, despite the costly operation performed by Dr. Tommie Hennard and Dr. Bill Lockridge.
Secretary of State Christian A Herter testified that President Eisenhower personally assumed responsibility for spy flights over the Soviet Union to avoid Khrushchev’s trap. He urged telling the truth about the flights once Khrushchev had proof, and noted the unprecedented step of clear admission. He said the May 1 U2 wreck did not fully cause the Paris summit failure.
Daily News notes Khrushchev used the U2 incident to blow up the Big Four meeting and blamed Eisenhower. Herter says Eisenhower did not receive personal orders and questions why he avoided personal responsibility. The May 1 plane downing was denied then admitted in May.
