Gov. Price Daniel’s tax program won passage in the Texas House after a long clash over increases in natural gas, tobacco, and liquor taxes. The measure totals about 149.7 million in new revenue for 1960 61 to bridge the gap with the 332 million spending bill, and needs Senate approval.

Former secretary of state John Foster Dulles is buried at Arlington National Cemetery after a state funeral with military honors. President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, and foreign dignitaries including Konrad Adenauer and Andrei Gromyko attended. Dulles died at 71 from cancer, ending a career aimed at world peace during the cold war.
U S Weather Bureau reports clear to partly cloudy skies with warmth through Friday and scattered thundershowers in the afternoon and evening across Amarillo and Panhandle regions. New Mexico sees a few thunderstorms along eastern borders, otherwise fair with gusty winds and cooler highs.

Washington AP reports elderly sleeping cars owned by Pullman Co are parked at 19 military installations as a standby fleet. The government leases scrap sleepers for 90 dollars a year each to guard mobilization readiness, while ships remain the government’s property.
Wednesday night the Panhandle House rejected the governor’s tax plan by 5 to 3, while the governor’s program passed 78 to 65 before third reading. Supporting the program were Ted Springer Amarillo Jesse Osborn Mule Shoe H G Wells Tulsa. Opposing were J Edgar Wilson Amarillo Charles Ballman Borger J W Buchanan Dumas Will Ehrie Childress Granger McIlheny Wheeler. Rep Wilson voted by pairing while hospitalized after a light heart attack.
After more than 12 hours of debate the House tabled an anti-gas tax plan 84 to 60 while advancing a general tax bill for 1960 61. The Senate blocked HB2 and deferred action on HB5 seeking legal opinion as both chambers seek to erase a 41 million dollar deficit with state accounts on thin ice per Comptroller Calvert.
Will Harrison reports for The Daily News that a New Mexico legal staff member may handle matters for an administration official facing a lawsuit. The update appears on page 27 in today’s edition.
May 27 report from Canyon notes final exam papers sold on the East Texas State College campus with prices from five to twenty dollars. Dean Mitchell Jones says purchasers are uninformed and naive while college officials guard offices against theft and tampering. A student was caught in the chemistry office with a master key as exam pedlars operate a master copy system and altered grade records are under investigation.
Memorial Day will be observed Saturday with downtown and suburban stores closing. Potter County offices close Friday and Saturday, including the courthouse and county tax office and the city school tax office in the courthouse annex. Randall County offices at 3806 Bowie close Saturday only.
B R Barfield told Chamber members the Mecca ’69 redevelopment plan for Amarillo downtown may be closer to reality than expected. Richard Kellenberg of Hare & Hare outlined proposals including a new hotel coliseum downtown offices and apartments plus a central fire station. Progress toward objectives has begun with unnamed committee members steering implementation.
