The new Palo Duro Canyon highway across the canyon is dedicated as Hamblen Drive in memory of farmer W H Hamblen of Wayside who first began the trail decades ago and pushed for the route later improved by WPA CCC. Laura Hamner notes the road name should reflect his enduring effort.

Storms Cross High Plains Bring Rain and Hail

A line of thunder showers moved across the High Plains Tuesday night, bringing rain and hail to Dumas Dalhart Texline Canyon and Amarillo. Canyon reported a 20 minute hail storm with 3 inch deep accumulations near 9 p.m. Rain totals included 1.02 inches near Canyon and 0.61 inch at Dumas with hail ranging from pea to golf ball size.

Tax valuation study proposed for Amarillo city and school district

The city commission indicated it would authorize a survey on tax valuations if the school board agrees. Estimated cost is 51 500 and seven months are needed. Officials say the study would not raise actual valuations but would equalize values citywide and in the school district, with Eric Ehrenborg of Dallas likely conducting the work.

Amarillo Lie Detector Tests Ordered in Macias Killing

At least three persons will undergo lie-detector exams at Amarillo Police Headquarters today as detectives work the murder of Louis H. Macias 27 an insurance salesman who lived at 2311 Cleveland. Capt. W H Arterburn said no suspects are in custody and detectives probing Macias activities before his 5 PM departure. His body was found in his wife's car on Ross Street around 11 PM with police believing a gunshot killed him.
