The Apollo 10 crew led by commander Thomas Stafford and lunar module pilot Eugene Cernan with John Young returned to Earth after an eight day mission. Splashdown occurred 11:52 p m CDT 443 miles east of Pago Pago in the South Pacific. They reported being in great shape and confirmed the capability to land on the moon in future missions.
Eight people were wounded in a gunfire incident after a traffic accident near Texas Woman's University in Denton. Two remained hospitalized, while six or seven were treated and released. Police said the wounded were students from TWU and nearby North Texas State University, with no serious injuries reported. Officer involved gunfire occurred after a male motorist clashed with three officers at Hubbard Hall.
Farwell Texas golfer Willie Roberts reported a meadowlark was struck and killed on the No. 5 hole at Farwell Country Club by his tee shot during the weekend.
Senator Henry Grover of Houston began a filibuster to withdraw Texas petition to Congress for a constitutional convention. Texas is one of 33 states seeking a convention to pursue amendments. Grover spoke starting at 4 50 p m as debate continued in the Senate.

First prize went to Fay Huffines of Turkey, with prizes of 10, 6, and 4 dollars for first, second, and third places. The third place letter will run Wednesday. A permanent file of letters will be kept at the Daily News and many will be printed over the summer. Additional entries will be published later as top winners are chosen from many submissions.
