President Kennedy urges American sacrifices for freedom as Congress passes an aid-to-education bill costing 214 billion dollars. He also seeks permission to borrow 7.3 billion over five years for global loans. Critics question the necessity of such centralized spending amid rising state expenditures and enrollment growth.
Reporter Bob Wright sparked a community scramble for a lantern globe. James Parker of Sedan NM Mercantile, Mrs Phillips of Dumas, Dr P A Preslar of Childress, J C Smith near Ong, and Otto Pettis of Morrow-Thomas Hardware offered clues. An air and ground search by horseback, car, airplane, and helicopter continued late today in the Oklahoma Panhandle to locate the driver of a wrecked car who vanished after the crash near Liberal. Authorities extend the hunt across the border as weather cooperates for would be sightings. The missing motorist is described as a Victorist associated with the local area, with no immediate signs of the vehicle or its occupant.
West Texas State College football player Robert Drake died from carbon monoxide inhalation in Globe Arizona while en route to California for the summer. Teammate Dean West remained hospitalized in fair to improving condition as doctors treated exhaust exposure. Drake, born July 10 1939 in Cheraw South Carolina, leaves parents Sam and (names unreadable) Drake and six brothers.
Twenty seven Freedom Riders, all but two Black, were convicted of breach of the peace in Jackson Mississippi on a Friday night. Each fined 200 dollars and given six day suspended sentences. Judge James Spence said their conduct disobeyed the law and risked mob violence. Defense argued riders were herded into a white waiting room upon arrival from Montgomery. In Montgomery, Rev William Coffin Jr and three others were released on bond after 28 hours in jail following a bus station desegregation attempt.
Sheriff Lynn Urwin of Liberal Oklahoma coordinates with Beaver County officers in a nightlong search for a possibly dazed driver who crawled from an overturned car two miles south of Liberal. A billfold with M A Lorey’s name was found. footprints show a staggered, roaming trail across fields toward the state line. Aerial units and hospitals within fifty miles are alerted as the search intensifies for a potentially head-injured, semi conscious man.

Tulsa Oklahoma May 26 AP an educator urged mass production of intellectuals to keep the nation ahead in space and science age Dr James L Harlow dean of the University of Oklahoma college of education said the country needs these intellectuals to stay ahead of competitors and manage social consequences of vast research and development expenditures
In a rare two party contest in a Texas special Senate runoff, Democrat William A. Blakley of Dallas faces Republican Joan Tower of Wichita Falls for a six year U.S. Senate term. Blakley has served since January on an interim appointment, while Tower, formerly a political science professor at Midwest University, previously challenged Lyndon B. Johnson. Polls open at 7 A.M. in Amarillo and 8 A.M. in Randall County with voting stations active until 7 P.M. A poll tax receipt or exemption is required. rural exemptions may be claimed by affidavit. The statewide race allows voters from any judicial district in the Plains area.
Voters may cast ballots at listed voting places across Potter and Randall areas. Sites include Amarillo schools and fire stations, Canyon locations, and other civic buildings with precise street addresses and cross streets where polling occurs.
President Kennedy ordered the FHA rate on S15 20 year home mortgages cut from 5 to 4 percent. Coupled with an earlier 0.25 percent drop, the move saves about $4.47 monthly on a $15,000 loan. The White House also announced expanded mortgage purchases by FNMA and new bank advance efforts to spur savings and loan rate reductions.
Postmaster General Reginald Begins ordered a nationwide check of post office scales after a London couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ball, disputed a three penny stamp overcharge. Mrs Ball's package was weighed differently by post office scales and local shop scales. The Crown scales proved correct, but the Ball's appeal prompted an apology and a plan to extend scale inspections countrywide.

National League action shows San Francisco 3 Chicago 2 in 12, St Louis 12 Pittsburgh 7, Milwaukee 10 Los Angeles 7, plus Cincinnati and Philadelphia noted with unclear status. American League features Washington 4 Minnesota 3, Los Angeles 5 Detroit 4, Chicago at New York listed as rain or postponement, Boston and Baltimore rain delay, Kansas City at Cleveland listed as cold conditions.
Washington May 26 AP The government asked in federal court to invalidate the December election of officers by Teamsters Local 577 in Amarillo charging violation of 1959 election provisions. The Labor Department also seeks to force open headquarters financial records for inspection. Judge Luther Youngdahl set a June 5 hearing. Local 577 spans Oklahoma Panhandle Texas Panhandle West Texas to Andrews County and Eastern New Mexico.
Weather Bureau reports clear to partly cloudy skies and warmer conditions across Amarillo and vicinity and Northwest Texas through Sunday with a few widely scattered showers and possible thunder showers in the Panhandle. Central New Mexico through tonight shows partly cloudy skies with scattered showers. a slightly higher high is expected today. Hourly temps from yesterday show varying readings with sunrise at 5 35 a m and sunset at 7 52 p m.
Ochiltree County commissioners start over on a $200,000 county hospital project. The Wyatt C Hedrick firm of Fort Worth, named as architect, was dismissed in a surprise motion after a Wednesday meeting.
The commissioners court moved to suspend the firm over alleged failures to perform an adequate survey of county needs for a hospital and to provide a licensed architect for consultations. Commissioner Virgil Olmstead seconded the motion after observers noted initial agreement. Doctors reviewing the plans praised the core area, yet some concerns remained as the hospital story continues on page 2.
