A deep sea disaster near Kodiak Island results in the loss of 391 lives, with many presumed aboard a vessel that sank off the coast and prompted swift searches toward Seward for survivors and victims.
Alaska Steamship liner Aleutian struck a rock in Larsen bay near Kodiak early today and sank in deep water. Crew of 135 and 156 passengers were rescued by the coast geodetic survey ship Surveyor and taken to Seward, 800 miles northeast of Odiak. The master planned to return to locate the sunken vessel. Water was reported normal at the moment of impact.
The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce opens a mass drive at 8 this morning with about 100 volunteers seeking 1 000 members. Each business block teams and two-person home canvassing target every residence. Membership set at 5 dollars. The drive aims to build the largest Texas chamber through broad participation and visibility.
About 5 000 Rotarians arrived for Rotary’s 20th international convention with 7 000 more expected as the week opens. Delegates from Europe and across the U S filled hotels, trains brought in visitors, and bands played as a 40 foot Rotary wheel stood at Union Station. A baccalaureate sermon in Amarillo featured Dr Clark Buckner urging youth to seek life through religion. Texas appointments announced included William D Doughty Jr and Carl Franklin Smith receiving reserve corps commissions.
Dallas resident Charles E. Young, 75, longtime Texas newsman and former editor, died here yesterday. Born in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, he moved to Rusk with his parents, later edited in Palestine, and eventually served as editor of a Dallas political newspaper. His father, Dr. O. G. Young, founded the International-Great Northern lines at Rusk.
Cloudy with thunder showers in east Texas and portions of Oklahoma. Cooler conditions expected in north and west Texas and Oklahoma Monday and Tuesday. Strong shifting winds and fresh coastal southerlies anticipated along the Gulf coast.

He earlier lost consciousness when oxygen failed, the craft dropping 22 000 feet before recovery. Herbert Fahy fails to break the solo endurance record of 35 85 21 hours in Los Angeles fog, planning a second attempt. Gene Shank and Owen Haugland depart Wichita aiming for Robinsdale Minnesota, planning three days over Twin Cities before possible Texas leg, needing to land to officialize the attempt.
Reginald L. Robbins and James Kelly, young rail workers, became national aviation headlines as they piloted a spindlelike monoplane for over a week in Fort Worth. Their string of sustained flights broke records and charted a bold new chapter in civilian air history.
About 3,000 people attended the Potter County Singing convention semi annual festival in the municipal auditorium with many visitors from as far as El Paso and St Louis. The event drew participants from most Plateau counties as well as area soloists quartets and choruses. Mayor Ernest C Thompson praised the convention and pledged support for future gatherings. Robbins and Kelly are cited as local aviation figures connected to Fort Worth and West Texas flying ventures.
Father Armand W. Forstall of Regis College announced an earthquake of marked intensity was recorded on a Denver seismograph for over an hour as of 4 30 p m. The disturbance continued without a determined direction.
Major General Harry A Smith commander of the Seventh Army Corps area with headquarters at Fort Omaha died in an Omaha hospital at 62 after an intestinal operation. He fell ill while at a Lincoln horse show Wednesday morning and a Friday blood transfusion gave brief improvement before a relapse.
Buck Hoover, a Ponca City pilot, was injured but not seriously when an airplane he planned to bulldog a steer with at the QPO ranch arena cracked up near the ranch show stadium. Co-pilot R. P. Shannon was uninjured.
Berwyn Illinois police chief Charles Levy was shot and seriously wounded early today as he tried to arrest "Baby Face" Willie Doody for the February shooting of postal inspector F. E. Jackson. The case ties to a Chicago suburb crime wave and marks a high profile confrontation with a known suspect.
Dwight W. Morrow United States ambassador to Mexico arrived in Newark New Jersey from Mexico City this afternoon aboard his private car attached to the Pennsylvania Railroad Spirit of St. Louis on the way home from a Mexico City visit.
The Nicholas Senn high school band from Chicago captured the Class A championship at the annual national high school band contest in Denver. Modesto high school from California placed second.
May 26 Fort Worth A crash ends a seven and a half day sustained flight attempt when Jim Kelly and co pilot R L Robbins crash land after a belt buckle grazes the propeller causing a split blade. Experts confirm the buckle strike as the blade fracture cause.
Fort Worth aviators Robbins and Kelly landed after 72 hours 82 minutes 1 second aloft setting a new endurance mark surpassing the Question Mark by 21 hours 10 minutes. A split wooden propeller fractured by hail slowed their final approach as crowds swarmed the field and authorities struggled to manage the reception.
George Parr, a prominent Amarillo contractor of 1611 Harrison Street, underwent a major operation at St Anthony's Hospital after a sudden illness yesterday morning. Hospital reports indicate he came through the operation successfully.
