A violent tornado struck eastern Blackwell Oklahoma last night killing at least ten and injuring about seventy. Fires damaged Hazel Atlas Glass Co and a foundry while the town faced loss of water and power. Fire units and ambulances rushed to the scene as emergency calls spread via short wave radio.
Two people died and five injured as a series of tornadoes hit farms and small communities along the Texas Oklahoma border. The Tidwell couple died on their ranch near Cheyenne Oklahoma. their 9 year old son Wilbur survived injured. Dozens of towns reported twisters and heavy damage with multiple injuries and farm losses.
President Eisenhower selected Rear Admiral Arleigh A Burke as chief of naval operations over Admiral Robert B Carney. The White House denied any linkage to Carney’s off record war discussion rumors and said the choice reaches down to select Burke from among flag officers. Burke, 54, earned the nickname 31 Knot for WWII destroyer tactics and will supersede Carney as Radford and Nathaniel General’s Joint Chiefs terms were also under consideration.
Four men and three women named as Communist party leaders were convicted of conspiring to overthrow the government. The verdict followed about 12 hours of deliberation by U S District Judge Jean Breitenstein. Sentencing date not yet set. Defendants include Arthur Bary and his wife Anna both of Denver Harold Zepelin Joseph Scherrer and his wife Maia Mrs Patricia Blau of Los Angeles and Lewis M Johnson of Salt Lake City.
The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce board approved a resolution to form an Amarillo airport board to develop and operate the Amarillo Air Terminal and other municipal airports. The aviation committee will present the plan to the City Commission Tuesday, with Jack Pate as committee chairman.
Rep Will Smith of Beaumont pressed to adjourn by June 3 but the House voted 91 to 33 against moving the sine die adjournment to the whole House. The chamber will wait for Senate action on a 50 million dollar omnibus tax bill in the hands of the Senate since April 25.
Comparative readings at 3 p.m. yesterday show wind speeds of 28 mph in Houston and Dallas, 25 mph in Oklahoma City, and 27 mph in Amarillo. Visibility ranged from 7 to 15 miles with partly cloudy skies across the four cities.
The Senate approved a Democratic proposal for an 18 billion dollar five year highway program by voice vote, rejecting Eisenhower's ten year plan 60 to 31. The measure moves to the House as administration backs its financing approach.
