A Washington column warns that Guatemala under Arbenz is enabling Soviet backed terror near the United States. It cites gun shipments from Red Poland, kidnappings of businessmen, and airlifted arms to Honduras and Nicaragua, urging firm action to prevent a regional Communist base near the Panama Canal.
A Geneva World Health Organization vote levies a $350000 assessment on the United States beyond Congress approved funds. The piece questions if an international body can override U.S. constitutional funding authority and notes the Bricker Amendment was defeated.
The New York Central failed to block Robert R Young from voting 800,000 shares at the stockholders meeting in Albany. The railroad sought to postpone or prevent voting while Young seeks control of the Central. Decision reserved as the court indicated no injunction.
Partly cloudy conditions persist for Amarillo and West Texas with isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures range from highs around 71 to lows near 49 as forecasts call for warmer weather and storm activity later. High Methodist churchmen ministers and laymen begin arriving for the 45th annual Northwest Texas Methodist Conference in Amarillo. The five day meeting starts at 10 AM in Polk Street Methodist Church with Dr. Earl G Hamlett hosting and Dr. Eugene Slater as pastor.
The Amarillo reports show sun on 129 of 145 days in 1954. Readings at 3 PM yesterday noted wind 12 MPH, visibility 15 miles, sky partly cloudy then cloudy.
Secretary of State Dulles denounces a 10 million dollar Communist arms shipment to Guatemala and warns it could create a Red bastion near the Panama Canal. He notes tension in Central America as airlifted arms reach Nicaragua and Honduras while Moscow denounces U.S. moves.
Sen McCarthy accuses the Army of presenting a dishonest and phony chart to imply Schine had black marks. Army witnesses deny dishonesty as Lt. Col. Murray testifies charts aimed to compare, not stigmatize, with McCarthy mocking witnesses during cross examination.
A tentative Amarillo ordinance would regulate ambulance operators requiring city permits after proving public convenience and necessity. Funeral home firms N 8 Griggs & Sons Blackburn Shaw and Boxwell Brothers and Homer Eaton proposed the service to cover all ambulance needs, with equipment available for disasters.
James D. Mendenhall, ex Amarillo police officer, filed a suit in 47th District Court seeking reinstatement to the police department and back pay from May 4 after a suspension. He is represented by Harry Lofthus of Amarillo.
In the minor league slate Amarillo at Pampa was postponed due to wet grounds. Clovis beat Plainview 22 to 8. Berger went 9 for 8 with Abilene 5 to 1. Lubbock won 6 to 5 over Albuquerque. In the National League New York trounced Pittsburgh 21 to 4 while Milwaukee beat Cincinnati 3 to 1 and St. Louis won 9 to 4 over Chicago. Philadelphia-Brooklyn game postponed by rain. American League top scores include Boston 3 Philadelphia 2 and New York 9 Washington 3 with Detroit 5 Baltimore 4 and Chicago 4 Cleveland 2.
Frank Kesier of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce was named president of the Southwest Industrial Traffic League at the opening sessions of a joint meeting with Shippers Advisory. George Powell, Harry Dixon, and Kenneth Tubbs were named vice presidents, with Kesler succeeding Frank Higinbotham as president.
The Fort Worth Press hosts the Save the Soil and Texas awards banquet at the Herring Hotel in Amarillo. Region 1 winners from 51 Panhandle and South Plains counties will be honored at 7 PM in the Crystal Ballroom with Walter R. Humphrey as sponsor and Capt. Fred M. Sevier delivering the invocation.
