Bank raid ends in deadly clash in South Holland

Six robbers stormed the South Holland Trust bank but were halted by guardian Jacob De Young who waited four months to avenge his son’s death. De Young fired five shots, killing one bandit and mortally wounding another, while police and vigilantes gunned down two more as the group fled.

Booger Men Bandits Receive 17 Year Prison Terms In Local Robberies

Houston Woodring and Ben McCoy dubbed the booger men were found guilty of the Barnes Cafe holdup on April 21 and sentenced to 17 years each. The pair had earlier been convicted for the Carraway Grocery hold up, with related indictments still pending.

Heavy showers spread across the Panhandle ending a five day drouth spell. Wildorado led with about five inches as rain reached Dalhart Texline Hartley Channing and Tascosa with solid totals. Race Drivers Die in Crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

A speeding race car left the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and killed driver Pete Kreis of Knoxville Tennessee and his mechanic Bob Hahn of Chico California. The fatal crash marked 25 deaths in 25 years of Memorial Day racing at the venue. Babe Stapp and Chad Haehnel had a narrow escape after Kreis’ crash. Other drivers continued tuning up for the 25 mile qualifying run with 100 mph average speed expected.

Shriners Plan Open Air Ceremony Parade in Amarillo

Khiva Temple hosts an all day open air Shrinedom ceremony in the Panhandle with visiting Moslah of Fort Worth. Tom James leads the Moslah delegation and drum corps. Sheriff Slain by Constable in Thackerville, Ohio

Sherritt Bam H. Randolph aged 46 sheriff of Love County was shot through the heart and killed, allegedly by Constable John Smith of Thackerville. Deputy Lovell Green witnessed the shooting as Smith fled. Green pursued. Randolph, married with five children, was in his first term as Love County sheriff.

Guards in Toledo Fire Upon 2000 Rioters at Auto-Lite Plant

National Guardsmen fired on a 2000 strong crowd in Toledo after street lights were knocked out and smoke bombs set off near the Electric Auto-Lite plant. A 12 year old was wounded by a tear gas projectile as rioters taunted scabs and attacked workers.
