Judge E C Nelson appointed three appraisers to value the Amarillo Gas Company distributing plant after preliminary hearings in the condemnation suit. The court overruled gas company objections to suspending the case pending referendum petitions while about 50 potential appraisers were considered.
The U S Supreme Court today cleared the way for Albert B Fair former interior secretary to file a petition seeking to set aside his bribery conviction and $100000 fine in the Naval Oil Reserve leases case If granted the petition would push the long running Spikes libel suit toward final action as the stay on Fall’s sentence nears expiry. Two other items note the Lubbock trial of Fred Spikes vs Haley adjourned briefly after the death of Mrs F A Boone supporting the ongoing trial proceedings and deposition testimony.
Potter County grand jury meets this morning to hear new investigation cases filed since last week. To date thirty five indictments have been returned in district criminal court.
NEW YORK reports Pathe announced Pola Negri has signed a three year contract to star in talking pictures. Negri has not yet appeared in a talking film.
Bids for airway beacons on the Amarillo Albuquerque division of the Transcontinental route will be opened June 2 per an official from the division of purchase and sales in Washington. The contract covers electric beacons on the Amarillo Los Angeles segment, establishing a direct route via Tucumcari replacing the current Clovis lighted path.
Real summer weather hit Amarillo as Monday afternoon warmed to 93 degrees, topping the prior record of 92 set on May 15. The low was 62, with forecasts calling for continued warmth and Tuesday’s partly cloudy skies.
In federal court Monday a suit seeks cancellation of oil and gas leases on 12 000 acres west of Stinnett or about 3 000 000 in damages. Plaintiffs Armstrong Byrd contend Skelly Oil failed to develop the property. Skelly argues no more paying wells can be drilled and gas cannot be marketed.
The Shrine presentation The Sheik's Niece lit up the Municipal Auditorium with color music and comedy as Khiva Temple kicks off spring festivities. Ten production numbers plus six stars filled over two hours of entertainment. Dr T M Montgomery stars as the Sheik with Lela of Khiva engaged to Buddy Rodgers in a desert to Hollywood tale likely to repeat tonight.
The Tri-State Fair Association prepares night auto races with 50 000 watts of track illumination. Only three tracks in the U S have night lighting, at Wichita, Los Angeles, and the local venue. Races start at 8 30 p m for night and 2 30 p m for afternoon. admission is 1.00, 0.50 with complimentary tickets from association offices.
Nassau County Judge Lewis J. Smith adjourned the murder trial of 19 year old Francis Crowley after only three jurors were picked. A double panel of 100 veniremen will be called to find nine jurors for the slaying of Patrolman Frederick Hirsch. Crowley sat smiling between guards as Miss Walsh testified and defense attorney Charles R. Weeks argued the youth is emotionally unstable.
In San Diego on May 25 the prosecution and defense began selecting a jury for the Pantages case and three co defendants on charges of conspiring to violate juvenile court law by bringing two minor girls to a hotel party. Judge Turrentine denied motions to separate or merge trials as Jobelmann announced he would defend himself. Eight men and four women were questioned for the jury.
In Valparaiso Indiana closing arguments began in the second trial of Virgil Kirkland 20 charged with murdering his 18 year old sweetheart Arlene Draves during a Gary liquor revel last November The judge faces a direct demand for the death penalty from the state as Kirkland's lawyers challenge the prosecution evidence calling it wishy washy The defendant sat impassive through the proceedings.
Chinese Empire Cafe proprietor Jim Wing was badly bruised and cut when his coupe wrecked into a bridge near Panhandle while returning from Borger. Two passersby took him to Amarillo for treatment as the car was completely demolished.
The autogyro piloted by Johnny Miller is due at English Field in Pampa around 8 am after a 7 30 start from Pampa with a brief Amarillo stop. He aims to reach Albuquerque by Tuesday evening, continuing a transcontinental flight from Los Angeles, with prior engine trouble near Shattuck, Oklahoma.
Warden W. W. Wade of the Texas penitentiary at Huntsville arrived in Amarillo with several inmates summoned to testify before the federal grand jury. Accompanying him were C. Co. (Curly) Weir, Ross Jackson, H. K. Roberson, and George Sheffield, who are also slated to testify. The group motored to Amarillo.

Los Angeles May 25 District Attorney Baron Fitts described the double killing of Charles Crawford and Herbert Spencer as cold blooded racketeering. He said David H Clark a former deputy prosecutor acted as agent for a ring led by Guy McAfee. Clark faced two murder charges for the Hollywood real estate office slayings. Police reported McAfee under technical arrest and searched for June Taylor for possible facts.
A mine fire at the Kolar gold fields in Madras state leaves ten dead and 60 missing. Rescue teams report 39 survivors and continue efforts to reach the missing workers.
Amarillo will operate a special one way trip to Dumas on Friday May 29 leaving at 10 and arriving 11 50 with a $2 round trip fare. The trip includes the municipal band and honors Moore county and the North Plains crowd for the Santa Fe railroad completion. Reservations through the Chamber of Commerce. This is the first all passenger train to Dumas.
May 25 Lubbock delegates hear that mal-adjustment of the nation's exchange watered stocks and wages lagging behind machinery spur the economic low mood. Guy Hulse of St. Louis and E. G. Parker of Fort Worth lead the Retail Merchants Association of Texas session before 200 attendees at Hotel Lubbock. The luncheon opened by E. L. Robertson. Hulse discusses meeting changing conditions.
Junior Roberts a 12 year old San Jacinto student was severely bruised and cut after he ran into Third and Tennessee Streets and was struck by a truck driven by J C Burke. He was taken to Northwest Texas hospital for treatment and X rays to check skull injury.
Mrs Thomas L Simpson of Lubbock dies by drowning in a city park pool after luring her 9 year old son to the edge with a claim of money and leaping in. Passersby rescue the boy who later tells investigators his mother is dead. death not investigated by coroner.
A Bronx County grand jury indicted ex-convicts Harry Stein and Samuel Greenberg alias Greenhauser for the strangling of Vivian Gordon whose body was found February 26 in a Van Cortlandt Park thicket. Witnesses included Har ry Schlitten who confessed driving the death car and named the defendants. District Attorney McLaughlin said both men will be tried after Rudolph Duringer’s murder case is disposed of.
