Leonard Nussbaum, president of Amarillo Bus Co., has given Amarillo until June 10 to exercise an option to purchase the bus company for 168,458 dollars. City officials say they oppose taking over the company but may be compelled to, per city actions noted in Our Town.
The Sonics shut out the Border team 6 0 Tuesday night with hits and seven victories for a pitcher and support from Ron Davis. Page 11.
AtoIzzard surveys rail and road trends noting Canadian National Railway's order of five turbo trains for Montreal to Toronto service, promising four hours initially and three and a half after tweaks. He cites Rapido as sold out and discusses growing rail use as highways clog. He also comments on cars, safety rules, and a Roosevelt Hotel scene with autograph seekers.
Government urged sweeping civil rights laws and 100 measures to aid Negroes, including guaranteed jobs. Weather bulletin reports 50 arrests at Makindye with claims weapons came from the palace. Rioters’ arms traced to Mengo, the capital’s headquarters. Thunderstorms formed north of Dallas Fort Worth area and west of Waco forming risks for severe weather. Some hail reported near Hondo along U.S. 90. High in Amarillo reached 76.
Washington AP President Johnson saw his request for a four billion dollar rise in the national debt ceiling cut in half by the House Ways and Means Committee to a three hundred thirty billion limit. The panel cited an optimistic Senate committee staff report that revenues will exceed Treasury forecasts and that deficits may shrink to two point five billion for the current year and possibly a surplus next year. The measure moves to the full House in about two weeks as Republicans criticize administration spending.
New York stocks rose for a third straight session on improved mid May auto sales. Dow up 5.95 to 888.41 while the AP 60 stock index gained 2.4 to 324.2. Among gains were General Motors 1.37 to 85.12 Ford 1.25 to 47.75 Chrysler 1.62 to 43.25 plus Douglas Aircraft 2.37 to 86.87 Kennecott 3.75 to 116.50 Du Pont 2.25 to 200 and General Electric 3.37 to 107.12.
In Dallas a 23-year-old former Pennsylvania resident was arrested after the body of Jill Suthe Haslett, 18, was found. Authorities say she was suffocated, not raped, with the killer wearing pajamas. The suspect faced charges and requested a court‑appointed attorney. The case links to a developing alleged love affair. prosecutors aimed to charge him today.
AP report details Preston Moore winning the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Oklahoma against Raymond Gary, with Dewey Bartlett prevailing in the Republican runoff. Pat Patterson beat Don Kinkaid for the Republican Senate nomination to face Fred Harris. In Florida, Miami Mayor Robert King High upset Governor Hayden Burns in the Democratic runoff.
Glenn Stewart, wanted for the dismemberment slaying of Indiana factory worker Larry Schmidt, emerged from southwest Arkansas woods late Tuesday and surrendered to State Police Officer Bill Ingram. Schmidt's widow Edith, held on a preliminary first degree murder charge, witnessed the surrender after 16 days in captivity.
Viet Cong guerrillas apparently killed a U.S. Air Force pilot after his observation plane went down about 25 miles north of Pleiku in the Central Highlands. Another American pilot was rescued after a separate downing over North Viet Nam. Navy planes bombed near Saigon to deter a Viet Cong force massing west of the Tan Son Nhut airbase.
