Anvil clouds produced heavy rains hail and at least three tornadoes in the Panhandle area of Northwest Texas Tuesday afternoon. No injuries were reported. The first funnel touched down near the Glenn community north of Motley County destroying a vacant farmhouse and wind mill. A second twister moved west of Paducah and a third sighting occurred near Cee Wee, 25 miles southwest of Childress. The Swenson Ranch west of Paducah saw ground contact and a calf was killed. Highway 70 suffered a 15 foot asphalt rupture. Sheriff Elmer Clark logged the time at about 6:56 p.m.

CAPE CANAVERAL Fla May 24 AP The United States launched an experimental Midas spy satellite to test orbiting space stations for rapid ballistic missile launch warning. The 214 ton craft, boosted by an Atlas Agena rocket, orbits about 322 miles out and 292 miles high completing a 94.34 minute loop. Lt Col Henry Riepe says the 22 foot long messenger’s infrared scanner works. the mission tests equipment for future solar flares and launches at Edwards AFB Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg. Within two years a sequence of six to eight Midas satellites aims for continuous global coverage providing about 30 minutes warning before nuclear strike.
Soviet authorities released a U S Air Force C47 and its nine occupants after forcing down in East Germany last Friday. The crew, including Barbara McCash of Atlanta, were said to be airworthy but weather prevented departure. A Soviet letter cited a frontier violation and warned against future incidents as fighters fired warning shots. The Americans planned to fly the aircraft to West Germany once weather cleared, with U S military teams proceeding to the landing site.
