The Jaycees plan to plant 178 trees along the parkway from the radio transmitter to East Tenth Avenue to beautify the highway approaches southeast of town. Wild Ride Was Real Daytime Nightmare

Roy Lee Daugherty, 16, of Petersburg, suffered cuts and a skull fracture after a dangerous scooter hitchhike. He rode behind a car between Hale Center and Abernathy, tied to the rear by rope as the vehicle sped, the rope breaking after about four miles and the youth tumbling into a ditch before being hospitalized.

Hereford Man's Robbery Try Ends With His Arrest

A 30 year old Hereford man attempting a strong arm robbery at the Button and Bowl Shop on West Sixth was overpowered by owner Mrs Cherry Gragg who forced him to return part of the money. He fled but was pursued into the street and captured.

Oil Well Worker Dies in Accident Near Levelland

Leroy Nichols, 39, an Ace Well Servicing Co. employee, was killed while working on a suck rod at Co operative Well No 1 in Smyer field when a 300 pound counter weight fell from a beam. Sheriff Bullock said the decapitation occurred about 1 30 PM. Nichols had come from Sundown six weeks earlier. Funeral arrangements are pending at Price Funeral Home. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs L B Nichols of Sundown.

Footloose Town Off to Harvest

Hammtown with 10 self propelled combines starts south from Perry Kansas on May 24 to begin its ninth harvest season at the Waggoner Ranch near Vernon Texas. The outfit will move north all summer toward the Canadian border. N R Hamm owns the operation with Mason Bruton as superintendent and Floyd Cruz as maintenance supervisor. The crew plans to harvest its first wheat of 1950 at the ranch next weekend.

Methodists Report Membership Gain at Northwest Texas Conference

The Northwest Texas Methodist Conference opened its 41st session in Big Spring reporting a net membership gain of 3,426, totaling 94,262. The year saw 3,251 vows and 3,809 certificates, 17 new church edifices costing 1.011 million, nine parsonages at 130 thousand, and total funds of 4.129 million. Inductions Barred Without Congress Okay Bill Passes House

The House passed a draftless two year extend/ment of the Selective Service Act by 216 to 11 and sent it to the Senate. It would keep youths 18 registered but require Congress to declare a national emergency before inductions. The bill, titled Manpower Registration Act, blocked four amendments aimed at desegregation.

Wheat Acreage Increase Looms For Panhandle

A bill to raise 1950 wheat acreage quotas by 100 000 acres in the Texas Panhandle was approved by the House Agriculture Committee subcommittee. The measure would lift the national quota by 800 000 acres, mainly in Colorado and western states. Rep W R Poage said only Panhandle counties would gain allotments in Texas and the Senate has not yet acted.

Efforts To Revive Dalhart Infant Fail

Dalhart May 24 A grim battle ends as 18 month old Alvie Maddux Jr dies after wandering from his mother and drowning in a stock tank. Public and hospital team applied resuscitation for two hours but could not revive him. Survivors include his parents and four siblings.
