Lacy Addresses Highway Impact at Herring Hotel

In the Old Tascosa Room Lacy spoke on How Highways Affect Communities. He noted about a third of Highway 60 will become an interstate from Los Angeles to Phoenix and from Bernardo, New Mexico to Socorro, New Mexico, with about 100 miles excluded. Aid Measure Is Approved by Senate Committee

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a 3.713 billion foreign aid bill to aid Communist bloc nations except Russia, Red China and North Korea. The vote was 14 to 1, with Senator Langer dissenting. The bill totals 110 million above House levels and 229 million below Eisenhower's request, and includes anti-junket and misuse of U S arms provisions.

Reuther Calls Walkout Now Insane Move

Detroit May 23 AP Walter Reuther UAW president called a strike now insane arguing the economy is unfriendly to bargaining. He told 650 delegates from Ford GM and Chrysler that backing a walkout could occur as the three automakers offer a two year extension with a 16 cent hourly raise. The contract expires about June 1 and 750000 unsold cars loom.

Starkweather Guilty. Faces Electric Chair in Nebraska

In Lincoln Nebraska Charles Starkweather 19 was found guilty of murder by an eight woman four man jury eight jurors. The verdict set up possible execution in the electric chair with sentencing to the state penitentiary and a potential delay for Caril Fugate’s murder trial.

Missile Blast Still Mystery

Missiles exploded at Nike Ajax base in Middletown New Jersey killing 10. Army experts from Washington and Ft Totten began on site investigations after arming devices were being installed when the blast occurred. The explosion damaged nearby homes and caused significant property loss.

Greeley Tract Sold for 1 872 750 Dollars

A 681 acre Greeley estate tract in southwest Amarillo sold for 1 872 750 dollars at 2 750 per acre to a Lubbock group led by Leland D. Payne. A. W. Lair of Canyon named the price and buyers, including Payne, declined to identify all partners. Continued on page 2.
