HOT SPRINGS Va May 1 British delegation to the United Nations Food Conference proposes an international buffer stock or food bank to store surpluses and distribute to the needy. The plan includes boosting production, subsidizing protective foods, and creating an international body to buy and distribute food and a data organization to study food problems.
Flooding from four swollen rivers devastates Midwestern farmland as levees break in Missouri Illinois and Indiana. Bearded towns like Beardstown and Vincennes evacuate thousands while the Mississippi and Wabash rise, threatening 100 000 acres and 55 000 acres of Knox County fields. Strong storms, military notes, and border actions frame a tense wartime day.
Washington reports new gasoline restrictions threaten luxuries and curb deliveries nationwide. The Office of Defense Transportation will sharply reduce 40 percent of mileage for commercial vehicles in 12 northeastern states, hitting beer liquor soft drinks ice cream and flowers. Amarillo newspaperman Frank W. Ewing died yesterday at 3 p.m. in Baylor Hospital Dallas after illness. He began in Amarillo News staff in 1931, worked at The Daily Oklahoman, AP editor roles in Denver Washington and New York, and was Phi Beta Kappa alumnus. Born 1908 in Higgins Texas, he leaves parents, siblings, and relatives. body to arrive Amarillo today, burial expected in Higgins.
London dispatch reports Mussolini pressing for moving German heavy coastal artillery to Southern Italy. The bomber war scene includes Zee Brugge raids, RAF and German retaliations, and multiple air and ground actions along the English Channel and coast. Casualties and damages are noted in Zeebrugge and English towns.
The Associated Press notes last week's sinking of three U S medium sized merchant vessels and the 930 ton Greek freighter Editors raised to 659 the AP total of Allied and neutral merchant losses in the Western Atlantic since Pearl Harbor. The three U S losses bring the total American merchant sinkings in those waters to six.
Junior and senior students presented a vivid color filled pageant at Municipal Auditorium. The production showcased a sweeping panorama of U S history from the Birth of Freedom to the present world conflict and included the Amarillo High School Band and A Cappella Choir. The program honored the gold star mother and concluded with the Ballad for Americans.
The navy announced Lt. Gordon R. Fiss of Virginia Beach received the Distinguished Flying Cross for sighting and aiding in the destruction of a German submarine in the Caribbean while piloting a patrol bomber protecting a convoy several months ago.
West Texas State College Canyon awarded degrees Sunday night to 100 graduates as the campus noted many students were away in service or preparing to join. Six earned Masters of Arts while others received Bachelor of Business Administration Science or Arts. President J A Hill presided and Judge Weaver H Baker urged vigilance against Nazism and communism, warning liberty could be at risk without clear thinking and action. Dean R P Jarrett and Hill highlighted war records and the upcoming service of graduates in memory of those who served in Bataan Corregidor Pearl Harbor and North Africa.
Vera Anderson, a 19 year old 90 pound challenger from Ingalls Shipyard, faces Billy Strmiska, 35, 118 pounds from Oregon Shipbuilding, in Pascagoula for America's champion woman welder of 1943. Strmiska, born in Texas to Czech parents, works beside her husband on the Portland line as both compete for the silver cup.
Allied North Africa headquaters report eight hundred miles of Tunisia's 1 200 mile railroad repaired despite 40 bridges destroyed and enemy retreat. Brig Gen Carl R Gray Jr says at least 50 locomotives and hundreds of cars were left behind, with rail service nearly immediate for Allied troops and often ready before commanders allowed traffic.
The Amarillo vicinity predicts cooler conditions Monday with fresh to strong winds and occasional showers. West Texas shows little temperature change, while New Mexico expects scattered showers and thunderstorms, cooler east of the Continental Divide Monday evening.
Washington reports the June coffee ration will be the largest yet with Stamp No 24 valid May 31 through June 30 for one pound. Price Administrator Prentiss M Brown notes the supply has improved enough to consider higher rations, though permanent increases are not guaranteed.
