Public notice lists a 1 p m June 5 auction of 60 used City of Amarillo vehicles including cars wagons pickups and two ton trucks at a designated disposal site as announced in city records and local reporting.
A planned West Texas State Bank would be located at 400 15th Ave in Canyon. Friday tabulations by the State Highway Department show low bids of 889304 for highway construction in Potter and Hansford counties. A new high school costing 632500 is included in a 950000 Memphis school bond package before voters. The Texas House approved 101 million in teacher pay raises and redistricted into 86 districts.
The YWCA meeting featured Bob Achzehner an electronics engineer and former Kentucky resident now in Arlington Texas presenting UFO slides and discussing recent United States sightings. Government officials say UFOs lack proven extraterrestrial origin yet many unofficial investigators remain convinced flying saucers are real and possibly Mars or Venus based.
The 8th and Tyler neighborhood saw two large planters unloaded in front of the Silver Grill. Wynne Veale, our man in Pampa, notes a local AFL CIO estimate says a four member family needs 123 dollars a week to live decently.
The Texas House cleared a $101 million teacher pay raise compromise and moved toward a tax bill and redistricting reforms. Gov. Connally supported the package, noting raises vary by education and experience, with local districts contributing about $31 million of costs. House sponsor Rep. George Hinson said children will benefit while the redistricting bill proceeded without vocal debate.
In Chicago from Miami, Donald G. K. Awong 30 posed as Poncie Ponce of Hawaiian Eye for a week. He accrued 782 in hotel charges, forged a credit card, gave radio interviews, and signed autographs before authorities moved to curb the ruse. The case centers on fraud allegations as Awong’s fake role ended by law.
Dominion 24 hour cease fire amid Dominican civil conflict. Brig Gen Antonio Imbert Berrra’s government claims gains as forces press rebels to Ozama River. Gen Jacinto Martinez Arana cites low casualties while Red Cross reports evacuation of wounded.
Roy Lane a 50 year old Norwalk California painting contractor traveled 3000 miles to contest a minor traffic violation in Municipal Court. Judge Moody found him guilty but suspended the fine and costs. Lane complained the officer first offered speeding ticket but then charged him with crossing a yellow line during peak traffic. He said he returned to contest the charge to avoid admitting guilt.
The United States announced it will pull out about 1,700 troops from the Dominican Republic once an equal number of Latin American forces arrive. Brazil will send 1,250 troops, joining 428 soldiers from Honduras Nicaragua and Costa Rica, totaling 1,678 Latin American troops in Santo Domingo. Lt Gen Bruce Palmer Jr will command until a Brazilian is named.
London AP Raymond Edwards a Kent farmer teaches his flock Spanish to ease export logistics. He uses an English Spanish dictionary and speaks to sheep in Spanish, saying the animals are picking it up quickly. A Ministry spokesman acknowledges some language issues with animals but cautions against overthetop measures.
Saigon reports the South Vietnamese government crushed a military civil plot supported by Viet Cong elements to overthrow it. Thirty three officers and seventeen civilians were arrested including the commander of Prime Minister Phan Quat's honor guard. Captain Huy anh Tan Hung died during arrest while escaping.
Nearly two years after a Bolivian Air Force crash in South America, the body of Charles C. Bunch, 53, of 3600 Fountain Terrace, an employee of International Devel, was located on a mountainside in the Andes. Two pilots were also involved in the crash.
Bolivian armed forces chief Gen Ovando Candia displayed weapons he said were communist made seized during anti government protests. He charged that foreign agents trained in Cuba and Moscow sparked the unrest as authorities moved to quell strikes and demonstrations against the expulsion of miners leader Juan Lechin.
