Rift in Korea Regime Deepens Over Troop Withdrawal

Seoul reports a rift within the new military government as Marines and paratroopers occupying the capital refuse to return to camps. An authoritative source, not officially confirmed, said the order came from Lt. Gen. Chang Do-Young who leads defense, government, and the junta. The troops seek more government representation amid demonstrations by students and veterans, while Chang urged an end to protests and a focus on rebuilding the economy.

Death claims W C Townes prominent Tex Panhandle architect

William C Townes 78 of 3404 Western died at 5 10 am Sunday after a six month illness. Born June 28 1883 in Haskell he moved to Amarillo in 1905 and built a long career as an architect designing many schools federal buildings and courthouses in the Texas Panhandle. He worked in firms including Smith Townes Townes Lightfoot Funk and Townes Funk until 1939 and served in World War I era projects.

Amarillo Man Dies In Highway 287 Crash

An Amarillo man Joseph Allan Desmond, 46, was killed when his car rolled twice and struck a dirt embankment on Highway 287 near the Canadian River bridge. He died at the scene. survivor includes his mother Cora Desmond and sister Ted Barber. Funeral arrangements by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home.

Workers For Dam Honored

Panhandle and South Plains civic leaders honored by the Borger Chamber of Commerce for work toward the Canadian River Dam project. Leon Hill of the Bureau of Reclamation outlined progress, with boats expected on the new lake by spring 1965 and construction beginning early next year, taking about three years. Impoundment is planned for December 1964, and testing for the dam site is near completion. The water system for the 11 member cities will start about 15 months after dam construction begins, with the Authority responsible for recreational facilities.

Pacifists Clash With Sailors at Polaris Base Protest

In Holy Loch Scotland a flotilla of 11 canoes carried demonstrators toward the Proteus as 1,000 others stood ashore. Police arrested 38 at the protest the largest against the base since its activation. Navy and police boats guarded the site as water hoses repelled climbers.

The Cuban Revolutionary Council seeks a ransom for 1,200 prisoners from the April 17 invasion. Jose Miro Cardona says Fidel Castro may release them for 500 American tractors. A ransom fund is planned in a Miami bank with initial donations and loans already in hand as representatives stay in Miami Beach awaiting results.
