Severe storms drenched the Texas Panhandle causing up to 6 inches of rain in places while tornadoes touched down near Levelland Clarendon Muleshoe Silverton McLean Shamrock and Tulsa. Flooding swamped Plainview with 3.75 to 5 inches of rain as Running Water Draw rose to 3.5 feet and a Ziegler Music Store roof collapsed. No injuries reported.

Driver survives fiery crash east of Claude on US 287
An 18 wheel tractor trailer left the road about seven fifty a.m. yesterday and crashed into a tree destroying the cab. Driver Dorman Hinson of Auburndale Florida escaped with minor injuries and was treated at Northwest Texas Hospital. The Florida owner Elvis A. Long owned the loaded rig containing corrugated boxes.

Jury sentences coach to death for Cantrell slayings

Lewis Blaine Hershey, 83, retired general who oversaw the draft of 145 million Americans in three wars, died in Angola Indiana. He was found dead in his motel room by his son Marine Col Gilbert Hershey. Autopsy planned. burial at Arlington.
