Economy Lands Sharp First Quarter Slump In GNP

HEW Chief Recommends No New SS Tax Hikes
Caspar Weinberger told a House subcommittee that the administration would not submit new Social Security tax proposals to halt deficits totaling $14.6 billion over the next year. He cited congressional cavalier disregard for earlier proposals to curb benefit increases and warned that delaying taxes after the election would be fiscally irresponsible.
