A satirical piece cites U S News & World Report claiming Ho Chi Minh’s regime carried out repeated purges to crush opponents and nationalists. It argues antiwar activists minimize the killings as they oppose U S intervention, warning Saigon could bleed if the U S withdraws and a coalition takes power.
The Wall Street Journal reports Americans will spend about 60 million dollars on bottled waters this year, up from two years ago. California Texas and Florida lead in sales with Los Angeles as the largest market and Sparkletts Drinking Water Corp. operating vending outside many supermarkets. Prices range from 29 cents for a half gallon to about 1.65 dollars for a five gallon jug.
President Nixon and South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu will fly to Midway Island on June 8 to assess the Vietnam war and explore paths to peace. Thieu had called for a summit to align policy, amid Nixon's national address proposing mutual withdrawal as part of peacemaking.
The Century Limited sold to National Railways of Mexico now runs nightly between Mexico City and Guadalajara as El Tapatio. The New Yorker touts a bustling diner scene aboard the route.
In Logan Oklahoma, near Kiowa Creek, giant mammoth bones emerged from sandy soils. The largest fragment measures 24 inches long and 12 inches wide, weighing about 30 pounds. Dr. Gerald Schultz of West Texas State University identifies the finds as mammoth remains dating from 10 000 to 100 000 years ago. Discoverers are Mrs. Maxine Roper and Mrs. Zoa Faye Phillips of Carrouzett.
Sen Wayne Connally of Floresville accuses Gov Preston Smith of pressuring Texas senators to approve a bill that would split the Parks and Wildlife Department to gain control of 75 million dollars in parks bonds. Senator Charles Wilson says Smith seeks bond influence, while Connally notes committee members show little interest in the plan and questions the need to redivide the agency.
Apollo 10 astronauts prepared for the final lunar approach with a televised log as Earth grows smaller and less than a day from the moon. Cmdr Eugene Cernan opened the broadcast saying hello from the crew as they continued training and planning intricate maneuvers.
At the United Presbyterian Church general assembly in San Antonio, 840 delegates approved by strong voice vote a Latin American post urging the Nixon administration to restore diplomatic relations with Fidel Castro's Cuba and lift the eight year old U S trade embargo, seeking quick action.

Smith notes area growth from days without paved streets.
