President Kennedy spoke to about 17 000 at Madison Square Garden urging swift passage of a medical care proposal for the aged. He warned of doctors’ possible refusal to treat patients under the plan but expressed resolve that old age support must back progressive legislation.
U S troops in Thailand rise to more than 4 000 as Washington plans for a 5 000 man total while Bangkok assesses the threat from Communists in Laos. Ambassador Kenneth Young says forces stay while a threat exists and seeks SEATO help. Gen Harkins says the troops have the situation well in hand.
The American Medical Association will broadcast a reply to the Washington administration initiative promoting Medicare. The telecast on NBC and KGNC TV starts at 7 p.m. and was paid for by doctors nationwide to counter the president’s daytime national address.
A letter from D. E. Scott of Wellington argues that rapid progress leaves laws behind and burdens courts. He critiques child labor laws for preventing under 18 youths from finding work to support families.
In Texhoma Oklahoma early today City Marshal William Aaron James and Joe Hartman were found dead from shotgun blasts in an apartment near the City Hall. Suspect Kenneth Hoover 24 was arrested and authorities said first degree murder charges would be filed. Dr Robert Cozine found the victims after Hartman called him reporting James had been struck.
President Kennedy named Cyrus R. Vance as secretary of the Army, succeeding Elvis J. Stahr Jr. Vance, 45, is general counsel for the Defense Department and will assume the post after Senate confirmation and when Stahr leaves June 30 to become Indiana University president. Vance, a Yale graduate and former Navy officer, is a Democrat allied with Lyndon B. Johnson.
Sun shine streak continues in Amarillo with 133 clear days recorded out of 140 in 1962. Comparative readings noted at 1 p.m. Sunday.
A California couple died when their pickup slid in heavy rain, struck from behind by a Greyhound bus near Alaneed on Route 66. A 15 year old Guyman student drowned at Schultz Lake while attempting to swim across deep water. Rescue teams and law officers assisted at both scenes as the day turned to night.
Borger hosts a touring cast of 128 performers for The Dragon with 51 from Formosa and 19 other nations. General Ho Ying-chin leads the group, now in Borger for performances at 3 p.m. and again tonight and Tuesday. Tickets cost 1.50 at White Kirk in Amarillo.
Federal investigators say Billie Lol Estes may have millions hidden in Switzerland and Brazil as Senate hearings begin into his rapid rise and the ties to official Washington. FBI IRS and State Department probes seek clues to possible foreign deposits and influence peddling in the 37 year old farmer financier’s case. Estes is free on bond and expected to testify as sessions open next month.

A brief tornado touched down near Shamrock at 5:35 p.m. Sunday destroying a barn owned by Jim Tarlant. High winds felled fences and tore tree limbs with no injuries reported. Hail about an inch in diameter and .63 inches of rain soaked the area as two weather systems moved from Matador and Clarendon into Oklahoma.
