ATLANTA May 20 The 68 day strike against Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co ends with a one year contract. W A Smallwood of the Communications Workers of America says ratification by about 40 000 workers in 700 cities is needed. No lockouts or strikes during the term and arbitration provisions are included in the settlement.
Donald R. Hopkins named the third Airman of the Month by the 2344th student squadron. His parents from Clifton New Jersey arrived for ceremonies at 11 a.m. in the Service Club Amarillo Air Force Base. He receives gifts from Amarillo merchants and citations from Gov. Shivers and Mayor Jordan and will be seated on the reviewing stand for Armed Forces Day.
In the Senate a clash unfolds over future highways with Democrats backing Gore s plan for a 17.9 billion five year outlay across interstate primary secondary and urban routes. Republicans push to substitute an Eisenhower proposal funding 38 billion over 10 years with a focus on a 40 000 mile interstate system. Debates continue as no vote is expected before next week.
A government advisory panel recommended continuing the general three dose Salk vaccine schedule. Surgeon General Scheele said the advice is being distributed to health authorities nationwide.
