Funeral services for Thomas Eugene Johnson editor of The Amarillo Globe-Times will be held at 4 PM in Griggs Funeral Chapel. In Geneva on May 20 AP reports backstage talks between East and West raised hope the Communists would discuss Indochina peace. The United States warned the nine party conference could fail unless Reds alter stance. Reds reportedly would discuss a cease fire without demanding recognition for Laos and Cambodia. Chou En Lai reportedly indicated willingness to set aside recognition claims to let talks proceed. Western delegates remained cautious awaiting renewed negotiations and real progress.
Mitchell faces criticism from Wright Morrow a Texas Democrat over national committee actions. Morrow says Mitchell arbitrarily denied him floor privileges and questions his status since his 1952 resignation over Adlai Stevenson.
A mother cat and five newborn kittens rested on the second floor northeast corner of the Southwestern Bell Telephone building at 815 Tyler. Construction workers found the litter yesterday morning, and continued work without disturbing the family.
LACROSSE Wis May 20 The Pentagon atomic coordinator urged immediate creation of an agency like the Manhattan Engineer District to push peaceful atom development. Robert LeBaron chairman of the Military Liaison Committee to the AEC said a five year pace could be reached, not a crash program, noting 350 million tax dollars spent over five years and significant engineering effort.
William Cashore, 14, from St Helene's School Center Square Pa wins the National Spelling Bee with 900 dollar first prize. Sandy Smith of Memphis Tex places fifth the best finish by High Plains contestants. Texas entries Doroth Sanders Sheila Cline Bill Neyland and Nancy Varley miss several words in the national contest.

In Galveston on May 20 the old Ball High School building was sold to the Texas Prudential Insurance Co. for 243686 dollars. Prudential President Stanley Kempner announced the 68 year old building will house the company's home offices.

In Manhattan hundreds of high school students rioted in the subway, smashing windows, ripping seats, and triggering emergency cords. Police questioned 43 youths, with about 2,000 participants from four big schools gathering at Van Cortlandt Park.
