The Borger area strike over union security and wages ends with contract terms. Maintenance of union membership for one year and a three day escape clause, 5 cent hourly raise, a $20 monthly cost of living bonus for 12 months, and double holiday pay are agreed. Non union workers return to work. no closed shop.
A 100 member trade trippers group and the Buffalo Band returned to Dalhart after touring four states. The contingent, welcomed by local officials in Goodwell and Guymon, faced muddy roads and rain as they received city keys and lively band salutes along the way.
Bob Hope and NBC team staged two benefit performances in Amarillo to fund a new water system for Boys Ranch. At the Paramount radio broadcast and Municipal Auditorium show, audiences paid from 1.20 to 25 dollars and enjoyed Desi Arnaz orchestra, Colonna sketches, and Hope’s restless humor. The cast teased locals including Mayor Hagg and Boys Ranch director Cal Farley as they prepare to travel to Detroit for their next radio appearance.
A cafe operator said an off duty waitress entered his restaurant in Jackson and slapped a chocolate pie into his face saying she had planned it for six months. Police checked the waitress's rooming house but were told she had left for Texas.
Mrs. Amy Earhart says Amelia Earhart was on a secret government mission when she disappeared during the 1937 round the world flight and believes her daughter was taken prisoner by the Japanese. She cites letters and messages to support the theory and says attempts to contact Japan’s consul failed.
Jackson County Grand Jury indicted 26 additional people on vote fraud charges connected to last Augusts primary, bringing total indictments to 65. Senator Kem charged Attorney General Tom Clark with dereliction of duty over federal review findings of no federal violation. The probes center on Missouri Fifth District Democratic primary and Pendergast influence in Kansas City.
Four hundred advance hotel registrations indicate the Panhandle Chapter of the American Petroleum Institute expects a record Mid-Continent meeting in Amarillo opening Thursday morning. Don Emery of Phillips Petroleum will discuss federal power over oil and gas, with Don Gilman of Western Oil & Gas Association outlining industry public relations.
May moisture tops records in the Panhandle as Amarillo reports 4.31 inches with year to date 17.54. Shamrock leads seven day totals at 4.33 inches. Stations across Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico log varying rainfall while irrigation dairy and farm notes urge moderation after dust bowl memories. comedian Bob Hope, dining at the Herring Hotel, jokes through a steak lunch as he previews an itinerary to Detroit Philadelphia and New York before a six week tour with plans for a Rio vacation with his wife. He will later appear on Bing Crosby show and star in Paleface with Jane Russell.
In Grandview Missouri on May 26 94 year old Mrs Martha E Truman the President's mother showed signs of improvement according to Brig Gen Wallace H Graham the President's personal physician. Graham said she was feeling better than in the last few days though still grave with heart weakness. President Truman earlier noted she was weaker and not having a good day. Charles G Ross reiterated the update at a news conference noting the fight and determination she displayed tonight. Despite the rally her condition remains grave though she ate fried chicken gravy and mashed potatoes for supper and drank milk.
State Rep Blake Timmons and Sen Grady Hazlewood co sponsored an amendment to the Rural Equalization School Aid bill in Austin. The change frees tax funds to expand Boys Ranch schooling and to maintain current operations and teacher salaries, Mayor Lawrence Hagg announced before a Bob Hope broadcast at the Paramount.
