Total Texas belt harvest forecast at 67.9 million bushels with 293,912 acres in wheat in Amarillo TEC area. Harvest in Deaf Smith and Childress counties follows in June according to TEC and Texas Department of Agriculture estimates.
Vietnamese and American reports detail heavy enemy assaults in South Vietnam and across Cambodia and Laos to mark Ho Chi Minh's birthday. The fighting includes shelling of over 60 Allied positions, a government post overrun on the Mekong Delta, and large-scale air raids. U.S. casualties total 155 killed and 632 wounded with 14,000 weapons captured.
Washington AP. Sen. Tower joined Sen. Yarborough in urging extra relief for tornado victims in West Texas. The measure would provide temporary housing up to a year, expand disaster loan forgiveness, offer unemployment aid and debris clearance, with a provision to waive up to five thousand dollars of disaster loans for low income families. Red Cross and volunteers coordinate relief as Lubbock suffers extensive damage.
Amarillo city commissioners discuss whether garage sale permits are needed with proposed $10 fee and policing costs. Atty. Oklahoma City police questioned a 25 year old hitchhiker who said he picked up bloodstained clothes from the two Kekahbah brothers. Detectives linked the 21 year old University of Oklahoma student David Sloan and his 19 year old date Sheryl Lyon Benham to the case. A drive to raise 20000 dollars for the Greater Southwest Music Festival aims to cover the first year of operation by spring 1971. The Bank of the Southwest hosts a June 23 deadline and annual meeting to decide on plans and whether to hire an executive director or pause activity. The festival would offer competitions demonstrations clinics and performance opportunities for high school bands orchestras ensembles and soloists modeled after Enid Arlington and Corpus Christi events. Officials anticipate about 7500 participants early on and up to 20000 by later years.
