Randall County jury convicts Rip Hall McAlpine III 23 of illegal possession of marijuana. Judge E E Jordan grants probation after a 33 minute deliberation and a raid on his Southwest Amarillo apartment yielded seeds syringes and pills. McAlpine testified the drugs were not his and not his knowledge.
The Supreme Court overturned Timothy Leary’s drug conviction and struck down the federal tax on illegal marijuana transactions. An 8-0 ruling protected Leary under the Fifth Amendment by allowing him to avoid the tax, which could have exposed him to self incrimination and state prosecutions. The decision limits federal marijuana laws by barring prosecutions for transporting untaxed marijuana when fifth amendment protections apply.

The Army voided the AH56A Cheyenne helicopter contract with Lockheed Aircraft Corp valued up to 875 million dollars after finding performance failures. Lockheed chair Daniel J. Houghton vowed legal action from Burbank and New York, calling the termination unjustified. The move ends a plan to field a Vietnam era armed helicopter and follows a prior cure-notice rejected by the Army.
The Texas Tech medical school measure moves to the governor after passing the House 134 to 7. Amendments allow use of facilities in Amarillo Midland Odessa and El Paso and require the Lubbock teaching hospital to be built without state funds. Rep. Delwin Jones of Lubbock supports the Senate amendments.
