A Civic Club Presidents group urges uniting welfare and charity bodies under a single Community Chest. They propose merging Rotary Kiwanis Lions and other clubs into a United Civic Club to cut waste and annoyance, centralize youth work, and streamline business life.
The note advises flying the American flag at home and business and lists a caravan to Amarillo Air Force Base forming at 1:30 p.m. on Third Avenue west of Tyler. It aims for 200 cars. Other items mention two steak cuts sold in pairs and a quip about mildew if rain doesn't stop. It ends with a cynical line about three man categories: the rich, the handsome, and the majority.
The Argentine Chamber of Deputies voted 121 to 12 to separate the Roman Catholic Church from the state. The session featured pro Peron protests as President Peron, ill with influenza, remained at home. Peronista deputies celebrated while radicals clashed across the chamber.

President Eisenhower vetoed an 8.6 percent postal pay raise bill and signaled he has votes to uphold it. The Senate will vote Tuesday on overriding the veto. He urged quick enactment of a fair raise for about 500000 postal workers, noting costs and fairness concerns.
The Justice Department asks the Supreme Court to rule that Louisiana’s coastal boundary in the Gulf ends at three geographic miles, not ten, affecting offshore oil rights. Gov. Kennon supports Louisiana’s claim for the full continental shelf while noting federal authority extends to 100 miles.
Sandra Sloss a 13 year old eighth grader from Granite City Illinois won the national spelling bee in Washington D C the seventh time the title has gone west of the Mississippi. She spelled words such as onomatopoeically papyraeous mnemonic and crustaceology defeating an Arizona contestant and ending a long day of competition. Texas sent nine spellers but Houston's Barbara Grevsky was the last to drop in a field of sixty two from 32 states.
Gov. Shivers suggested lawmakers quit and return in a special session with pay to finish their work. The House adjourned to Monday while the Senate pressed a water program measure and moved toward finalizing a tax balanced budget. Reactions varied from support to opposition, with critics calling the move a political tactic to promote a 2 cent gasoline tax.
The Canadian River surged during a KGNC radio segment as Ken Duke and Larry Filkins moved their mobile unit to a bridge on Highway 87. They captured the river’s splash on air from 11:45 a.m. to 12 noon, noting the rising water while urging listeners to relax.

DUMAS May 19 Special A head on collision south of Dumas killed Amarillo police Captain William E. Sowell and critically injured his wife Mrs Lowell. Four others were hurt including Bartola Torres and his two daughters Josephina and Pitrea of San Angelo Texas.
NEW YORK May 19 A court upheld Yale student Eugene F. Suter Jr. 22 in rejecting a $400000 fortune from his father. Surrogate William T. Collins ruled his insistence on freedom of choice is legal and not subject to forced acceptance. He cited Lucretius and Seneca to illustrate values guiding the decision, stressing legality over ethics or motivation.
