Bob Hope Day Arrives with Hope Show in Amarillo

Two National Irondene Company engineers and Dic Davis arrived in Amarillo to set up the Hope show, with more technicians and publicity staff to arrive this afternoon between 1 and 1:45. The specially chartered TWA Constellation will depart Hollywood Gate No 1 and the Amarillo Army Air Field will be opened for a large crowd, as a bandstand is erected on the east side for a western welcome.

Nicklaus New Grid Coach at Horace Mann

Windy Nicklaus, ex West Texas State College coach, will coach football and teach at Horace Mann Junior High under a $3,500 contract. Tom Gilly gains pay raise and athletic duties while remaining with the football team. A $102,208 addition to Dwight Morrow School is awarded to Walter Wertz Company. Wertz bid $104,836 with reductions.

Amarillo Event to Benefit Boys Ranch with Radio Broadcast

Amarillo hosts a fundraising event featuring English Field for the Amarillo High School Band. Will Rogers Range Riders act as hosts while state patrolmen direct traffic. KGNC will broadcast the reception and shows from 7 45 to 9 15 p m at the Paramount and Municipal Auditoriums. Performers include the Amarillo High School orchestra and 85 voice A Cappella Choir, with Julia Dean Evans and Louise Dicken. Proceeds go to Boys Ranch. seats remain today at Maxor Drug.

A tornado tracked from Pampa to Skellytown and Borger, then dissipated north of Panhandle around 5 PM with no damage reported. Residents witnessed multiple funnel formations, airborne debris, and flash rainfall. Panhandle saw clearing by 6:15 PM. thundershowers and heavy rain followed across the Panhandle. power lines were damaged and 0.50 inch rainfall recorded at English Field. A 28 year old housewife fired five shots at her husband, missing him, as he fled from their Dallas home. One bullet struck his legs from an antique revolver. Police said she shot because he beat her. She claimed to have practiced today at a country telephone pole and said she did pretty good.

Chief's Mother Holds off Death

President Truman's 94 year old mother Martha E Truman remained gravely ill at her Grandview home. She showed slight improvement after the President visited and daughter Margaret arrived from Pittsburgh. Doctor Wallace Graham said her pulse was regular and heart functioning fairly well though her condition remained grave. The President, pale and tired, stayed near her bedside as plans shifted to rest and continued care.

Plane in Sea After Airman Fails to Land at Mitchell Field

An unidentified Army pilot on a Maxwell Field mission ran low on fuel and ditched his P-47 in the sea after obeying orders to bail out. Mitchell Field and Coast Guard units joined a search as a tow plane radioed engine trouble and a crash followed.
