Three Mexicans were arrested in Fort Worth in connection with the assault on Mrs Anna Schaefer and her 14 year old daughter Ann of Niles City. Police will present them to the victims for identification.
The first anniversary of the Matewan battle, where ten were killed, passed without incident in the Tug River area. In Williamson 69 Mingo County citizens were sworn in as state police volunteers ready to act in emergencies. Preparations continued to swear in more across West Virginia and Kentucky border towns with about 200 men expected to take on police duties.
Gulf Oil Company moves to a second site on the Burkburnett ranch in Carson County. A drill rig arrived at Panhandle on Thursday and material trucks were sent to a new location after Gulf No 2 proved productive. Details on the exact site remain uncertain as officials are not on the ground.
In Chicago on May 19 the regional director of the State Cotton Seed Crushers Association announced the U S cotton crop will be about 30 percent smaller than last year. A telegram from Henry C Wallace urged federal support for oil and feed research to aid development and improvement in the industry.
The steamship Panhandle State caught fire while berthed at a North River pier near Ellis Island. Firemen fought the blaze below decks but the vessel was beached on the flats to prevent total loss. The ship, valued at 5 million dollars, had a skeleton crew of 25 and arrived from Boulogne and London days earlier. It was to sail back on Tuesday. Nearby vessels were at risk as seacocks were opened to flood burning compartments. The Panhandle State is owned by the U S Shipping Board and operated by the U S Mail Steamship Company Cisco Texas.
Albert Rowan stands trial in Abilene for the murder of G. W. Street a Dallas postal clerk. Witnesses finished and the case was expected to reach the jury by ten o clock tonight as courtroom crowds filled the venue.
Washington May 9 Edward Douglass White chief justice of the United States lay dead at his home as leaders order government to stand still. Flags will fly at half mast worldwide while bodies are prepared for burial in Oak Hill cemetery Georgetown. Officials closed departments all day and private funeral services will be held as America mourns a renowned jurist.
Linn A. B. Gale, held at Fort Sam Houston guardhouse on draft desertion charges, asks in federal court for a writ of habeas corpus to move his case to civil court and for bond release. Judge West notes Canlis brothers case precedent. Gale had declared no similar intent to plead before a court martial. Also reported, a Texas Refining Co refinery building burned in Greenville, damage about 100000 dollars.
The 61st General Assembly of the Southern Presbyterian Church opened in St Louis and deferred action on unifying the five creeds to next year. Rev A V Curry was elected moderator and Rev J D Leslie was re elected permanent clerk. Evangelistic emphasis urged pastors to know the youth and their views while addressing moral dress concerns.
Ten individuals and nine corporations, members of the Association of Dealers in Masons Building Materials, pleaded guilty to violations of the state anti-trust law. All will be sentenced next Thursday.
Washington May 1. Henry Ford telegraphs to Chairman Dillingham and senate elections committee urging a thorough probe of charges that Senator Newberry of Michigan won by fraudulent expenditures. Ford notes the Supreme Court voided Newberry’s conviction in federal court and says the Senate, not the courts, is the proper place to investigate.
An engineer from the United States Bureau of Mines told the Natural Gas Association of America convention that about one third of natural gas production is lost in transmission due to defective pipelines and joints. He warned that only ample supply prevents a collapse of the industry and urged improvements.
Mrs. Freda Stecher testified before a House committee, lamenting hardship after her husband Eugene Stecher fled to Germany with Grover Cleveland Bergdoll. She described Bergdoll pressuring him to join, leaving no support, and dismissed by Mrs. Bergdoll when seeking sympathy.
The National Coal Association plans to protest to the Interstate Commerce Commission over railroad practices that allegedly favor mines with rail contracts, arguing the system excludes smaller mines and risks price spikes during shortages. The group, representing over 2000 operators accounting for more than 60 percent of soft coal, claims misallocation harms consumers and could threaten next winter’s supply.
A provisional plan announced in Victoria, British Columbia, proposes government control of liquor distribution across the province. Stores would be run by government agencies with continuance by majority vote in each district. The note references the first U.S. liquor factory established in June.
The Rev. Henry C. Swearingen of St. Paul Minnesota was elected moderator of the 133rd General Conference of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America in Winona Lake Indiana. He defeated the Rev. John B. Laird of Philadelphia by 560 to 312 and succeeds the Rev. Samuel S. Palmer of Columbus Ohio.
The American Ambassador George Harvey in his first speech since presenting credentials said U.S. armed forces came to Europe to save the United States, not European states against Germany. He spoke at a Pilgrims Society dinner in London praising the Pilgrims and urging closer Anglo American understanding amid Europe tensions.
