The city plans a $93 million modernization of roads and signals, including a computer driven traffic system named TOPICS funded 50-50 by federal and state authorities. The project covers downtown and outlying routes with a wedding cost of about $2 million for the new computerized signals.
An apparent gas explosion hit downtown Amarillo around 9:25 a.m. destroying the Tex-Air Oxygen plant and damaging nearby homes and businesses in a preliminary loss estimate of a quarter million dollars. No serious injuries were reported though flying glass cut some residents. Fire officials initially feared workers inside the building. Jim Prowell Jr., vice president of the Tex-Air subsidiary, provided further details.
Witnesses recall workers leaving for a coffee break moments before the blast at the acetylene plant. Fire crews battled a blaze caused by a suspected gas leak, with precautions to prevent water from reaching carbide in fear of a larger explosion.
Defense Secretary James R Schlesinger said five Americans were killed 16 missing and 70 to 60 wounded in the Mayaguez incident off Cambodia. He noted higher figures after reassessment and described limited force used during the Koh Tang rescue operation and subsequent air strikes.
Six senators from across the spectrum plan a June 2 and 3 debate on foreign and defense policy as Congress weighs a $30.3 billion military procurement bill. The energy bill also faces House action ahead of a 10 day recess framed by broader budget battles and possible price decontrol.
An Arab detonated a grenade at a northern Israeli schoolyard injuring no one as another bomb and a mortar shell caused casualties in Jerusalem and Lebanon. In Acre a man died holding a grenade on a school roof. A Palestinian group claimed responsibility for West Bank blasts that wounded 22. Sadat said Arab unity against Israel under Ford talks in Salzburg.
A 17-year-old boy was found shot to death beside a country road 35 miles south of Belfast. Police say the slaying may be by sectarian assassins or a kangaroo court linked to terrorist groups.
