The United Arab Republic urged the U N to withdraw its peacekeeping force from Egypt and the Gaza Strip as five Arab armies prepared for war. In sports, Dave Stockton shot a 5 under par 56 to lead the Colonial Golf Classic opening round, one stroke ahead of Ben Hogan and two others.
Amarillo report notes a city commission decision to shutter the municipal park for large gatherings. A jurist later presided over a burglary case and a note on a naval reserve captain urging closer active reserve integration was filed.
FOLSOM residents recall Miss Sarah J. Rooke a telephone operator who stayed at her post Aug. 27, 1908, warning subscribers before being swept away by floodwaters. The historical note appears in the local memory segment on page 9 of the newspaper.
Rep. Charles E. Chamberlain reported on free world ships delivering cargoes to North Vietnam in Haiphong. Four British and one Cypriot vessel unloaded cargoes in April, bringing to nineteen the ships flying friendly flags that have carried goods to the enemy since January. Two juveniles arraigned on burglary charges become the first in Potter County to have a court appointed attorney after a US Supreme Court ruling. Amaro attorney Tom J. Fotheringham named as defense counsel by Judge Carl Perlman. County Atty Naomi Harney notes this may be the first such appointment in Texas under the ruling. Trial dates not yet set as campus classes proceed.
In Richmond Virginia Thomas Bain and Joyce Ann Bain wed on Saturday. The event features a photographer’s nightmare as nearly every key role is held by someone named Bain. The officiant organist best man maid of honor two bridesmaids and the flower girl all share the Bain surname and 50 members of each Bain family attend from southside Virginia. Despite the shared name there is no shown linked relation between the families.
