Mrs. Edyth Meacham, once struck at 7th and Polk, returns downtown with a new guide dog after training in California. A car ran a red light, stopping inches from her and the dog, who was terrified. She urges drivers to watch for guide dogs and respect them.
A Spearman reader forwards a Hutchinson County Democratic convention resolution that requires county employees to be endorsed by the Democratic precinct chairman before hire and approved by the county chair, a move seen as spoils politics and a potential violation of civil rights and the Texas right to work law. The letter includes commentary on Supreme Court retirement age discussions and a juvenile problem contest entry from Mrs. Janice Harrison of Pantex, plus a note on hats by a Mississippi editor and a closing quote from Wes Izzard.

Today marks Armed Forces Day with a 10 30 a m parade in Amarillo showcasing military strength. Local residents will see marching units and patriotic displays along the route.
A two day Armed Forces Day program covers Friday and Saturday activities in Amarillo. Events include a parade on Polk Street with 3500 troops and aircraft overhead, a noon address by Lt Gen V E Megee at the Amarillo Country Club, open house at Amarillo AFB, an Airman of the Month program, baseball games, a band concert, drum and bugle corps, and a chaplain address.

Weather forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for continued fair and warm conditions Saturday and Sunday. Low early Saturday around 59 degrees with highs near 94. Panhandle area remains generally fair and hot over the weekend.

The Air Force unveiled its first long range guided missile the jet powered Snark at Bolling AFB during Armed Forces Day. Nor thorp Aircraft Inc of Hawthorne California revealed its dimensions 74 feet long 42 feet wingspan and about 15 feet high. Several test flights occurred at Patrick AFB Florida with one Snark reportedly traveling over 1900 miles along the range from eastern Florida into the Caribbean.
Robert Stroud, age 66, confined in solitary since 1920 and now at Alcatraz, sues in federal court to regain general prisoner status. He contends the sentence is cruel and unusual, cites denial of yard time, movement, books, and conversation, and seeks permission to resume bird studies and prison reform research.
