Public exhibition of the Santa Fe streamlined train the San Francisco Chief will be held in Amarillo on May 28 at the Santa Fe station from 10 30 AM to 9 30 PM. H C Vincent traffic manager says visitors can tour the six exhibition cars including a dome car and dining car with staff on hand to explain features. The train enters regular service June 6 with first Texas run June 7, while Amarillo will gain direct service from San Francisco.
Lloyd H Wood named as Republican gubernatorial candidate with backing and leads in early returns. George M Leader holds commanding lead for Democratic opponent. Wood dominates GOP tally in 3,350 precincts with 297,666 votes to 56,573 for Stephen son and 19,466 for Chamberlin. Leader leads Democrats with 103,096 to 66,646 for McClelland and 11,728 for Schmitt. Pay raises of 5 cents an hour set for Dallas and Houston Ford workers starting June 1.
President Eisenhower urged progress reports on ending public school segregation in the District of Columbia and suggested Washington could serve as a pilot model for national integration. Georgia leaders condemned the ruling, with state officials planning to sidestep it and consider private schooling schemes to avoid desegregation.
C O Towne of the Citizens League challenged the May 11 bond election on the Amarillo expressway and civic improvements after voting records and poll tax lists were raised. Mayor Curtis said poll tax lists were provided to election judges, not property tax lists, and Towne noted an unqualified voter. City attorney Manning said to overturn, illegal votes must outnumber the margin of 7,076 to unknown final count.
