Evald and Diana Johnson are expected to post bond and leave Potter County jail today according to their attorneys. Bond for Evald was set at 3000 dollars and 2500 for Diana on federal charges of transporting a stolen car across a state line. They may face a federal charge of flight to escape prosecution in state court and plan separate post release paths to Lynwood California and Munising Michigan.
ECA administrator Paul G. Hoffman said to reporters he does not plan to resign or pursue politics. In Bonham, Ray Peeler a longtime local druggist died after months of illness, aged.
Twelve western nations agreed to pool economic and military strength into a centralized armed force to deter Soviet aggression. An overall council of deputy foreign ministers will coordinate the collective security program, with a permanent chairman, likely American, and each country to contribute according to its resources.
The U S House Ways and Means Committee rejected President Truman’s demand for deep cuts to depletion tax allowances for oil gas and non metallic minerals. It widened the loopholes by voting for smaller changes and added a 15 percent depletion credit for clay and earth producers while approving a 5 percent allowance for sand gravel marble and granite none of which are covered by the depletion provision.
At a May press conference in Pearl Harbor former captives Marine Sgt. Elmer C. Bender and Navy chief electrician's mate William C. Smith spoke of 18 months in Communist hands. They said treatment was considerate with no violence and noted living standards were low. Smith hesitated on the spying confession.
President Truman said Democrats and Republicans alike should be defeated in November those blocking his legislative program. He defined obstructionists as those opposed to welfare measures while excluding valid policy disagreements. He urged an independent Congress, not subservient, and warned against a grab for power in reorganizations.

A young mother Mrs June Ellison seventeen nineteen? age nineteen at a farm home west of Bovina suffered burns while saving her infant son Mickey Don after rubbing alcohol ignited her dress from a butane range flare. Her husband Howard and Buck Ellison aided extinguishing the flames and both were treated for minor burns. The mother and child were taken to Clovis Memorial Hospital for care with the full extent not yet disclosed.
The Hub City of Lubbock topped 70,000 as census work continued, with district supervisor L D Whiteley remarking that counting is ongoing. Amarillo reports a 73,000 to 74,000 range, with chief Walter S Shaller noting the area's big count was still under way.
A US Air Force B 29 bound for Lakenheath crashed on landing at Lagens Air Base Terceira Azores early today killing 16. Eleven crew and five passengers, all believed military, were aboard with names withheld. The plane from Barksdale Field had engine trouble after leaving Bermuda and may have collided with a parked motor car before flames destroyed it.
Tomas Gomez of McAllen received a three day suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to murder without malice in the January 1949 killing of Manuel Garza Martinez.
In Miami on May 18 ranchers tighten fences ahead of Old Tack’s 2nd National Cow Calling Contest. Judge Woody Pond says arrangements are ready for Saturday with first calls after 2 pm and an old-fashioned basket lunch at noon. Local clubs sponsor the event. Boy Scouts assist with logistics.
