Washington notes the Argentine corned beef episode as a public clash over import policy and Roosevelt administration order. Beef lobbyists clash with lawmakers while the president seeks a measured relief amid broader trade tensions and domestic pressure.
In Washington on May 18, Senator Norris alleged senators ate canned beef bought by the navy from South America in the Senate restaurant. Senator Lucas pressed Senator O'Mahoney who blamed the rules committee for the procurement. Norris sent for a can and about a dozen senators gathered at Lucas' desk to inspect it. The can bore a domestic packer label though the meat was reportedly from South America.
The Dionne quintuplets have learned to bow for their presentation to the King and Queen in Toronto next Monday. They think they know the royal couple from a large photograph in their home, and no further special training will be given.
G A Jerry Sadler of the Texas Railroad Commission calls for wide open production in all Texas oil fields after 60 days if other states especially Louisiana fail to cut their allowable production. He cites crude stock from Louisiana and Illinois流 as causing an oversupply and urges major companies to press Louisiana authorities, warning of a chaotic future if proration laws are not observed.
In Montreal on May 18 greeting crowds estimated at one million cheered King George VI and Queen Elizabeth as their royal train arrived. The city wore holiday dress with flags and banners as the royal couple began a cross country tour spanning Canada and the United States, covering about six thousand miles.
Chairman Dies of the House Un American Activities Committee says evidence shows a organized anti-Semitic drive in the United States with ties to Brig. Gen. George Van Horn Moseley. He cites letters urging removal of Jewish influence and signals a broad inquiry into anti racial propaganda and covert financing of fascist acts by powerful backers.

President Lazaro Cardenas, on his first northern border visit in 30 years, toured the Juarez Valley and met El Paso chamber delegates. He urged building a highway El Paso to Mexico City and ordered the Agriculture Ministry to address the Juarez Valley water dispute.
MONAHANS May 18 Special C. W. Ely 18 years old of Hal N M faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Night Police Chief Earl Burkett. Ely is jailed at Pecos after arrest at Wink Texas. Glen Osborn of Alamogordo N M was arrested at Hobbs N M for questioning. Burkett was shot through the left lung while attempting to search a youth at the Monahans jail.
In Jerusalem clashes between police and Jewish youths leave over 100 wounded among demonstrators aged 10 to 16. Officials report injuries to police, a Czech consul official, and cases in Tel Aviv. About 175 000 Jews march nationwide amid mobilization signups.
Sloan General Motors chairman predicted continued auto industry expansion if national income rises. He told the monopoly committee that prices should hold while value increases to push buyers toward newer models rather than cheaper past ones. The hearing also covered United Aircraft Company founders boosting a $1,000,000 monthly payroll amid aviation enthusiasm.
Representative Patman of Texas gave a second blood transfusion to his 10 year old son and returned to work at the capitol an hour later confirming his son’s condition remained stable.
Austin May 18 The 108 page departmental appropriations bill filled another day in the House as lawmakers kept in session likely until June 1. Advocates of new taxes hope to sidetrack the bill and push an omnibus tax plan. The Senate quit at noon for the F. C. Weinert Memorial Highway dedication at Seguin.
Madrid crowds await Generalissimo Francisco Franco as the capital gears to mark Franco’s triumphant entry and the dawn of Spain’s nationalist order. A massive military parade features Italian and German troops, signaling the regime’s consolidation. An estimated 12,000 Italians and 5,000 to 6,000 Germans plan to sail home soon from Cadiz Alicante and Vigo respectively.
