France and Belgium raise the question of disarmament bringing a tense start to the League Council opening. Representatives debate arms limits as the session begins.
At Geneva the preparatory commission debated limits on armaments as nations faced the risk that disarmament could leave weaker states exposed to stronger ones. U S remarks urged concrete steps toward naval constraint, while Viscount Cecil and others urged treaty-based reductions menacing unemployment taxes.
The $16,000,000 public building bill was sent to the White House for signature. The House approved the crop stabilization provision in the Haugen farm relief bill. Discussion of congressional action on debt settlement muddled plans for early adjournment. Impeachment charges against Federal Judge Meekins of North Carolina were tabled by a House judiciary subcommittee.
More than two hundred delegates attended the second day of the Colorado to Gulf Highway convention in Bowie Texas. President Wikoff discussed route marking and cooperation along the C G Route and emphasized modern camps and tourist hospitality. Judge Sartain urged a connected national highway system to boost Texas tourism and noted the free bridge into Oklahoma. Delegates enjoyed a MacDowell Club recital and a Bowie rodeo followed by a large barbecue. Wikoff was reelected president with Fred Young of Bowie as an official.
Slaton farmer Henry J. Jurach declares a world tractor riding championship after piloting a Fordson for 72 hours with only brief breaks for meals and fuel refills.
Houston candidate for governor Lynch Davidson will speak at 2 o clock from the courthouse lawn in the Panhandle. J H Gouldy will introduce him. It is his first Panhandle campaign appearance.
Congress completed its approval of a 165 million public buildings bill to fund new federal structures in many cities. The conference report passed the House and Senate and was sent to President Coolidge for signing. allocations require congressional approval while most cities are unnamed in the measure.
Dr Talbert Rt Rowe was reelected book editor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South on the first ballot at the general conference in Memphis Tennessee today May 18. The Associated Press reported the selection occurred during the session held here.
Ten Panhandle chamber of commerce secretaries met at a noon luncheon with Amarillo committee members to discuss joint efforts for the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention. Speakers urged shared responsibility and touring caravans from Amarillo to neighboring towns to promote and benefit all Panhandle communities.
Harry Sample of Marland Oil in San Antonio was elected president of the National Oil Scouts of America. New officers include W. N. O’Rourke of Shreveport and N. F. Tanner of San Angelo. Amarillo hosts the next convention bid alongside San Angelo and Shreveport. The legislative committee will pick the site, with a preference to hold the next meeting outside Texas.
Henry Lipp aged 60 died from injuries after being dragged about 100 yards by a team attached to a harrow on his McGregor area farm. He had lived in the community 34 years and was a well known local farmer. The incident occurred Monday when the frightened team entangled him in the lines.
Early returns show Vare leading in the Pennsylvania Senate race with Pepper close behind and Pinchot in third place. The contest remains unsettled as officials continue to tally votes and margins shift with each update.
Returns from 403 districts show Republican U S senator candidates Pinchot Ware Pepper with tallies 7 196, 28 1538, 15 340 and 100 Philadelphia districts. Governor races show Bodiamen Phillips Tener Fisher totals. Democrat governor results list Shull Bonniwell Porter.
James A. Leroy, an escaped convict dubbed a self confessed gentleman bandit, pleads guilty to robberies and holdups he committed across Potter County and beyond. He describes the crimes in a handwritten confession unearthed while en route to a Louisiana penitentiary, detailing post office thefts, store burglaries, and a hold up with a pistol.
The Panhandle region’s canyon hailed as a beauty spot as state park board members discuss funding plans and benefits to residents and the state. Dr M J Hill of Canyon and Paul Horn of Lubbock delivered main addresses. A resolutions committee led by L A Miller Amarillo J B Garland Lamesa and G T Murphy Crosbyton was named. The session resumed at 9 this morning with another speaker lineup.
A severe hail storm struck near Byers northeast of Wichita Falls causing ruined grain crops and damaged houses. The same system hit Henrietta and Iowa Park with heavy rain. Plainview experienced large hail at 6 30 p m with some glass breakage but limited crop damage and light subsequent showers.
In Washington on May 18 the Senate joined House debates on farm aid. McNary urged immediate agricultural relief while McKellar called relief the session’s top issue. Robinson pressed for relief as the committee weighed policy on commodity levies and price measures.
A low pressure trough extends from western Texas to the Midwest while showers affect the eastern slope of the southern plains. Temperatures vary with a high around 90s and a low in the 50s to 60s, with today’s precipitation totals in the 24 hour period noted. The outlook calls for mixed cloudiness and continuing variable conditions across Amarillo and west to New Mexico region.
