A Bartlesville Phillips office communique directs all Borger area plant heads to open gates at 8 o clock Sunday if desired while a vote among workers shows 181 against returning to work and the union calls for a company proposal vote indicating continued work efforts despite picket lines.
At Borger Phillips Petroleum amid a continuing strike, Plains Butadiene Plant opened its gates after union members and plant officials moved toward resuming work. Superintendent T L Cubbage declared the gates open for employees to return, with about 100 workers seeking old classifications and wages, while union leaders urged staying away from the plant.
A large Amarillo welcome is planned as Bob Hope and his NBC troupe visit English Field next Tuesday to raise funds for Boys Ranch. Mayor Hagg proclaims Bob Hope Day with an 8 pm Paramount Theater show followed by a 9 15 pm Municipal Auditorium act. Tickets remain at Maxor Drug Store for about 100 Paramount seats and adjacent theater seats.
Mayor Lawrence Hagy designates May 20 as Bob Hope Day in Amarillo to aid the Boy’s Ranch. Humorist Bob Hope plans to visit to help raise funds for safety and facility improvements benefiting less fortunate youth in Amarillo and the surrounding Pisos region.
Amarillo business leaders plan a two day goodwill special on Rock Island Lines visiting 16 towns across the Texas Panhandle New Mexico Kansas and the Oklahoma Panhandle with 125 travelers including the Buffalo Band The schedule begins at Wildorado at 8 00 AM Monday and ends in Amarillo at 7 25 PM Tuesday A second trip over Fort Worth and Denver is planned next week with the same group and band attending the full tour
Wheat farmers in Armstrong County surveyed two days of hail storms that destroyed three quarters of 12 000 acres. Reports say 75 percent damage across several stretches west and north of Claude with 130 000 acres in wheat in the county. Rainfall totals varied, with moisture recorded at Childress 94 inches and Pampa 53 inches, while forecasts called for fair weather and little temperature change.
Pedro Chevez 62 of Amarillo died after being crushed by freight car wheels in Fort Worth Denver yards. He died at Northwest Texas Hospital about four hours after the accident. Survived by wife Felicia three sons Polo Benny Abbino Chavez and daughter Catalina Chavez. Body at N S Griggs & Sons Chapel. Funeral arrangements pending.
Washington May 17 James F Byrnes former secretary of state says both Russia and the United States talk too much of war and not enough of peace. He warns against take it or leave it attitudes and urges equal terms in negotiations while noting no country desires war. The remarks came during a Variety Clubs International gathering where he received a 1946 award in a private ceremony filmed for Hollywood dinner.
Miss Truman brings her first Texas tour to Amarillo with a concert at Municipal Auditorium on May 28. Tickets go on sale Monday at 109 East Ninth. price range includes tax from 1.20 to 3.60. Out of town orders accepted by mail, box 1214 or care of Tolzien Music Store. KGNC to broadcast interviews before and after the show.
The 260 telephone traffic workers and about 90 plant repairmen at Ninth and Tyler returned to work after a six week strike. A $4 weekly raise and back-pay were approved as Local 3024 members voted 100 percent to resume duties. Settlement talks with Western Electric aimed to cover 42,000 Southwestern district workers, but a final agreement remained uncertain.
Picket lines were temporarily removed but could be restored if a agreement is not reached by Monday. National Federation of Telephone Workers reports about 77,000 unsettled strikers remain, including 55,000 Western Electric employees. Houston workers still out as Western Electric line not withdrawn while Dallas Fort Worth and Lubbock crews have returned.
The battleship Oklahoma, recently raised from Pearl Harbor, sank quietly in mid Pacific at 1:40 A M, 540 miles northeast of Pearl Harbor. Towed toward San Francisco Bay, the hull listed and washed over, then parted tow lines and disappeared to a bottom three miles down, with no crew aboard.
