Postmaster W D DeGrassi reports airmail receipts in the Panhandle five times above normal during the first two days of Airmail Week. Hundreds of letters flood in from stamp collectors across the nation as towns along the proposed Amarillo to San Antonio route prepare to receive first direct airmail contacts.
Farm agents from sixteen Plains counties gathered in Plainview to assess crop and range conditions. Wheat prospects appear better, with rain aiding planting. most counties report good ranges and normal sowing, while some areas see variable moisture and steady optimism for yields around 50 to 60 percent of normal.
Fog shrouds the Sierra Madre search for a new Lockheed Electra on a delivery flight from Los Angeles to St. Paul. Nine aboard, including two children of an NWA engineer, are believed dead as aerial search struggles through dense fog near Daggett and Mint Canyon.
Miss Carolyn Mayfield of Canyon was chosen Queen of the West Texas State College Water Carnival at the opening of the Buffalo Swimming Pool. Twenty six bathing beauties competed, with Miss Julia Loewenstern named Miss Amarillo and Miss Helen Boff Miss Canyon. Ray Shackelford, the 6 foot 9 inch WT basketball star, ended the ceremonies by falling into the pool.
Partly cloudy and cooler Wednesday for Amarillo area and west Texas. New Mexico sees partly cloudy skies with little temperature change. In Amarillo, temperatures reach a maximum and a minimum in the 50s to 90s range with trace precipitation reported yesterday.
About one hundred Oklahoma City businessmen and civic leaders arrived in Amarillo on a Santa Fe train for the 34th annual goodwill tour. Led by Mayor Frank Martin, the delegation was welcomed by Amarillo Chamber of Commerce leaders and met by local residents at the Santa Fe depot. A platform ceremony on Polk Street featured Mason King and Rev. John R. Abernathy, followed by a dance at the Herring Hotel with Carlton Scales Orchestra and a girls band. The group planned a morning departure to Canyon Tulsa Plainview and Lub York.
Joseph K Davidson, 93, dean of Kansas City grain dealers and builder of the first grain elevator west of the Mississippi, died after a heart attack. A grain merchant for 68 years, he once owned 40 elevators in Kansas and Oklahoma along the MKT railroad. He served as president of the Kansas City Board of Trade in 1895.

The Potter County Thompson-for-Governor Club opened with a mass meeting at the Amarillo club quarters attended by about 100 supporters of Ernesto O. Thompson. N B Griggs chaired. Byron Singleton was elected secretary and will head the new headquarters. A membership committee was formed with Tully Garner, Hugh Gouldy, Jeff Capehart, Charles Ware, Jay Taylor, Jim Williams, Polly Parrot and Lawrence Hagg.
